Fixed: WinXP Problems on new system (SP2), Extreme Lag!!!

Ok, so since no one is answering my earlier thread, I've changed it around to reflect new details that I've found out.

First of all, the system is running slow. From opening web pages, to browsing files, to everything!!! I did read in an earlier thread that it might have to do with video, and hardware acceleration. Tonite, I'm going to approach it from that end. What exactly needs to be done here? Are there are any programs that might help me diagnose the problem? (All obvious signs of too many apps or services running are definitely not an issue. This is a brand new system with WinXP SP2, FireFox, and ZoneAlarm installed. And that's IT!)

All drivers are installed and updated to the newest versions.

EDIT: So, yeah, I turned Hardware Acceleration All the way down, and it still sucks. Scrolling down webpages is very choppy, and the system just acts very "laggy."

Please people, anything that I'm not thinking of????? I've searched through Google and Dell Forums to see what other people are having similar problems, and I can't find any!!!!

P4, 2.8, 512mb RAM.
40 Gig Maxtor
160 Seagate
48x CD-ROM
Optorite DVD-Burner
Winfast TV-Tuner

Thanks.

Are you by chance running an ATI card?

The fix I know of is removing current video drivers, and installing the latest, even if it means reinstalling the same drivers.

Not sure what causes it, but a video driver re-install will fix it.

see here

I had this problem before. To solve it I played with the monitor refresh rate. If you use a refresh rate of 75Hz for instance, try selecting a lower rate and then going back to the original one.

Thank you very much DaZ and Embryo for the suggestions.

First, I uninstalled the ATI Driver, and got the install program online. Installed it, rebooted....same thing.
Second, I changed the refresh rate to 60Hz (It was set @ 75), then tried setting it back up or keeping it.....no change.

THEN, I took a 32 mb Card out of my other system which has been set up for Linux (An AGP Card), and my new system is running fine now. No stutters, no hiccups, it's totally fine.

Then, back into my Linux box will go this ATI Rage PCI Card (That came with this new system.) I don't play games either way, so any graphics card is fine with me.

Finally, this piece of crap is "fixed." Even though I still have no idea what went wrong, or what else I could have done to fix it without having to change the hardware.

Thank you for the help, I appreciate it!!!!!!!!

I'm having the same problem,

Everything was working fine until I reformatted and installed Windows Pro with SP2 (Formally had WIndows pro no service packs). Now its just generally laggy online, with random connection failures, and slow in just general usage.

Pentium 4 2.4C
512Mb Geil Ultra Platinum 3500
Abit IC7
Nvidia TI4600
Winfast TV FM card
Lite-DVD burner
120 Gb Seagate drive

Any ideas?

Well, like the previous posts in the thread, if you can safely rule out any application/software issues, concentrate on the video card/display adapter. Update drivers, play with the hardware acceleration, refresh rates, etc. Ideally, if you have a spare video card around, that would be a good way to test the system.

EDIT: Another issue to point out, I also have the WinFast TV Card installed in my system.
