original title: Need help w/ w2k corrupt file @ boot!

-I was installing a hdd cooler and when i finished, the os won't start because of a corrupt file. It's something like NTOS something
something ...
-The system advised me to reinstall this file but i have no idea how.
-I tried to repair it with the windows cdrom, but in order to repair i have to insert an emergency/repair disk that i did not create
(i knew i should have!).
-I tried the other option where it takes me to dos to do some manual repairs or something, but access to all folders on my primary drive
is denied ...
If anyone has a way of working around this, LMK!!!!! I haven't backed up my files and stuff in half a year!

NEW PROBLEM: I can't see my D: drive now !!! but i can see the properties for the hardware and the drivers etc.
My cdrom is E: ... my primary is C: soo...............where is D:????

any solutions would be appreciated

Which file is missing, exactly?? How about NTOSKRNL.EXE in the System32 Directory?
Also, can you access your primary drive at all (via dos or something)?

Yeah! that's the file..!! i can't access my drive ... when i try to cd [folder] it replies with access denied ... i can't do anything to it ...

i wanted to copy the kernel file but i can't find it on the cd and i can't paste it to my hdd if i could find it .. the help file doesn't have a paste but has a copy .. odd

The CD had a Directory for making boot disks. If you can boot to DOS, then you can make boot disks.

I believe that the directory of file on the CD is makeboot.

Look for that. It will create 4 boot disks (I'm assuming you're running 2k). From there you can boot up and copy the files you need.

I got the system running...
but my d drive isn't showing up now ...

the properties show that it is there and the drivers are there but the drive isn't detected by the os? or i can't see it.
before i got the system to run i did a low level format (couldn't format any other way ... computer was on crack or something) so i could reinstall windows on this to add the file that i was missing onto the c drive .

Now that it is formatted and my os is working ... i can't see the drive ...

this has been very frustrating!!!1

ok ... i'm calm now...

any ideas?

right click on my computer, click manage. click on disk management, is the drive listed in there?

clicking disk management tries to set up a signature drive , but when going to the next step only one drive can be chosen ... under logical drives the d drive is still missing ...

the only place i see the d drive is under hardware properties...and during the scsi bios , the disk is detected

did the low level format destroy my disk somehow or do i have to do something to see it?

Do you actually have 2 hard drives or 2 partitions?

If you only have 1 hard drive.. then ya the low level format wiped it out.

i have 2 drives ...

sorry...didn't see this before, but disk 1 is the second drive ... disk 0 is the first drive...the one that works...it was covered and i didn't see it ...

well my disk 0 is healthy with a ntsf system file
my disk 1 is unallocated .. i don't know what that means but it has no info on my drive except the capacity
i tried to format this drive earlier but using a bootdisk with format ... still doesn't work because d: is invalid spec

how do i fix this problem?

i hope the drive isn't busted ... i can't afford another !!!
