tweakboy the latest drivers do offer the clean install option but but it does not remove old versions, while driver sweeper does.

Have you checked and see if the 2 cards are indeed using the same version of driver?
Open Nvidia CP and select help from menu, then select system information.

I had to reinstall Windows when I added a second 5870 for Crossfire... it's just one of those things that happens sometimes.
