Just buy a new lock from home depot or your favorite hardware store. You don't fix these sort of problem, you replace it.

Yeah, remove the other side of the knob, then the bolt should be able to retract.

it should! but its not!

its stuck and won't move.

It will pop out. It's probably just stuck to the door from paint, oxdation and weathering. Get a awl, punch or flat head screwdriver and use a hammer to pop the outer handle off of the door from the inner side of the door. There are no fasteners holding the outer handle to the door. The inner and outer handles are held together by the two screws that you've already removed from the inner side of the door.

This is the correct answer.

I have to admit that I'm astounded a grown man can't fix a door knob. This is a task I was able to complete when I was eight. How can anyone be that helpless?

finally! the guy i was expecting to fix it came over (the guy is a great with building. in fact he built the hous ehe lives in and his dads). he looked at it and got pissed. it should have a little lever inside to slide it over to get out. well this one didnt.

so he popped the door off (wich was a pain. when we had it painted they did the joints it was a bitch to get off) and pulled it out. part of the doorknob fell out. we pulled it apart and the inside of it was all plastic. WTF why is there plastic in the doorknob. sigh.

BTW, there's no way you're getting that door open. You're going to need to replace the entire outer wall of the house.

Ask your wife to take your man card out of her purse and shred it.

Last time this happened to me, I was in a hurry to get somewhere so I just roundhouse kicked the door open from the inside.
