Hi, my friend has a problem with his monitor. The computer boots up fine and goes into windows, but after he logs in, the monitor acts like it stops getting a signal, as if the computer were turned off. THe computer is still and he can get into safe mode without any problems. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? btw. he has a geforce4 MX. thanks. in advance.

Maybe the monitor cant handle the resolution windows is booting up in? I dunno.

I forgot the solution to this problem though... heh =/ Im sure somebody else knows how to save the resolution windows has to boot up in in safe mode.

Yea I would bet that windows is starting up at a display resolution that is not supported by his monitor. In safe mode you can change the proprities by right clicking on a blank portion of the screen and then under settings reduce the screen resolution to 800 X 600. Then reboot and see if he gets a windows screen. Check the monitor manual for max resolution if he still has it or get the specs online.

Windows 9x/ME will save changes you make in display properties while in safe mode (thus keeping you at 640x480x4bpp even after you reboot normally). I have been running only NT-based OSes (2k and XP) for the past few years, but unfortunately have never had any experience with their behavior concerning safe mode and display settings (never had any problems with it, that's why).

The OS is important. I can remember having this problem on other PCs running NT4, but unfortunately, I'm not exactly sure how I fixed it.

I >think< you have to boot into safe mode (or VGA mode for NT4), log in as Administrator, and then reset the display resolution that way. Your other option is to snag a 2nd monitor that CAn support the problem resolution, use it to change to a lower setting, then reboot. It honestly sounds like the resolution (or refresh rate) were set too high for the monitor.

I dunno if i remeber correctly... but there might be like a file you can modify in safe mod (might be wini.ini) or something... you open it with word pad and you mihgt be able to change the resolution manually...

Hope this helps
