Fixed it: Time Machine. Tells me I need way more than my boot disk size and fails.

There was some "partial backup" file on the TM disk that must of been there from awhile ago when I was using this external USB on a different system. I deleted that and retried it and it's working now.

Anyone ever run into this with their Mac and Time Machine (TM henceforth).

I've always had this issue on my 2.0Ghz Mini since I got it with Snow Leopard and it still persist with Lion on it.

When I turn on TM and select my destination disk, I pick a 1TB external USB drive that has about 420GB free on it.

My OS/Boot disk is 120GB and has 62GB of capacity used. So you'd think it'd be more than enough to do a TM backup of the OS disk.

I exclude any other disk from being backed up but cannot exclude the destination 1TB disk as it's non-selectable and from what I read this is how it should look.

It tries to run for about 3 mins and then stops and says that it cannot do a TM back up because it requires 1.28TB of free space and I only have 428GB available.

I for the life of me cannot figure out why it keeps doing this.

I have TM working perfectly on my 2011 13" base MBA. In that set up, I have it using a external USB hard drive that's connected to the Mini (not a typo) that's only 120GB in total capacity and only has 25GB of free space. With my MBA being a total usable capacity of 120GB and only 21GB currently consumed, that free 25GB available capacity on the external USB drive that's hooked up to my Mini is able to receive the TM backup from the MBA without issue.

As I said, this has been happening since Snow Leopard and persist into Lion. Prior to the Lion upgrade I tried booting from the OS install disc and running a permissions and disk repair but it did not help. Since installing Lion I've run a permissions and disk repair and still no change.

It's almost like it's trying to back up the destination disk that's 1TB plus an additional 200GB from some unknown location.

Has anyone else run into an issue like this and found a fix?

I've tried searching around and even posted the question at MacRumors but didn't get anywhere with it so far.
