It looks like GM has more troubles than earlier thought:

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/gm-recall/safety-watchlist-finds-stalling-complaints-about-repaired-gm-cars-n498346

As General Motors contests its first civil case in consolidated litigation related to a deadly ignition switch defect, a safety watchlist funded by the parents of a woman who died in a Chevrolet Cobalt has identified complaints about stalling in GM vehicles already repaired as part of the recall.

GM said it has found no evidence that the recalled part is to blame. But some customers are asking: What is?

if the keys are still on and the car is stalling it's no longer gm's issue.

the recall was for unintended ignition rotation.

they are not responsible for owners crappy maintenance.

Cause of ignition failure

Unintended ignition switch shut-off happened because the "switch detent plunger", designed to provide enough torque to prevent the ignition from accidentally turning off, did not supply enough torque. General Motors was aware of this potential problem, and held meetings about it, as early as 2005.[11]

It sounds electrical to me if the ignition is on and everything goes off. Maybe it wasn't the ignition all along...

Like I thought.....(from the OP's linked article)

"At a three-way stop my car just stalled out," she said.

GM has acknowledged that some of its customers have been reporting stalling problems in their recalled vehicles -- after getting the ignition switch repairs.

Sounds just like what master_shake was alluding.....poor maintenance.

Probably a buildup of carbon/gunk in the throttle body or dirty MAF or bad IAC.

This stalling at idle issue is very common and the cause many times originates with a dirty throttle body throat, esp. after the battery's been disconnected either for replacement or repair of an electrical component.

I had the same problem with my Silverado last year when I replaced the battery. Truck would randomly die at idle, just like the lady quoted above. Turns out the problem stemmed from a dirty/carboned up throttle body that had been compensated for by the truck's computer, until the battery was disconnected. When that was done, the computer defaulted back to its original idle settings and lost the adjustments it had made to compensate for the dirty/gunked up throttle body, causing stalls at idle.

Spent a couple of minutes cleaning it out with throttle body cleaner spray, an old toothbrush and a microfiber rag. Idle problem went away, never to return. And the article is describing much the same problem.

The ECU should quickly re-learn the correct idle speed though, whether the throttle body was cleaned or not. That's what it does.

I'm not surprised these cars are still having stalling issues. All of these Cobalts are over 6 years old now, and probably have tons of miles on the odometer. Not to mention that they weren't great cars to begin with.

What are the lawyers going to try next... a class action lawsuit for rust issues on 1989 Ford Escorts? Come on.
