Look at me! I'm cooler because I choose inconvenience for no reason!

Running Linux is an inconvenience? 😕

Okay, not going to get into that here, but you're making a very poor comparison

It's funny, POS old road bikes painted funny colors and converted to fixies command 5 times as much cash on craigslist as they would've if they had gears.

Aren't you forgetting the tight pants? Small handlebars? 🙂

I use to have one of these when i was little except it wasn't a road bike, it was a mountain bike. I liked it. pedaling backwards was fun.

Wow the lack of assumptions and info in this thread is astounding, even by ATOT standards.

I ride a fixie to and from work, its about 2 miles from my house. Commuting on my fixed gear is great, there are no hills on my commute and with less gears, derailleurs, other moving parts the less chance of something going wrong. Its not just a "hipster" thing. Some people (like me) enjoy them for simplicity. Yes some people do ride them believing its the "cool thing" to do.

I also prefer the clean look of a fixie as opposed to some commuter bikes that are laced with every new commuter do-dad to hit the market. Maybe some of you should do a little reading before shooting your mouth off about a topic you obviously know nothing about. May I suggest This.

fixed gear bikes are pretty fucking stupid.
the only advantages are so slight as to be barely noticeable.
and those slight advantages pretty much have to do with forcing a bad rider to be better...
I don't need to limit myself to 1 gear in order to push myself, and with multiple gears I NEVER have to walk my bike uphill!
and i seriously have no clue why you would want to NEVER coast on a bike... wtf?!

but still, I have far less of a problem with fixed gear bikes, as i do with track bikes on the street.
how fucking retarded do you have to be to ride a bike in the city with no brakes? a single skidding back tire is NOT adequate emergency stopping power.

not to mention how much money you're wasting by skidding out your back tire.
new brake pads = $10
new rear tire with colored tread to match your aerospoke wheel = $80
painting the street with your face because you wanted to look cool = hilarious

I haven't ridden a single gear bike in at least 10 years. However I don't think the ones I pedaled were able to go backwards. Just when you pushed back on the pedals it would activate the brakes, go back far enough and they lock up providing you with a nice drift. I don't remember it being that hard to brake those things. Considering me and a friend use to have sliding competitions with them I suppose they weren't challenging.

Don't get fixed gear and singlespeed with a coaster brake confused. With a coaster brake, you can lock the hub by cycling backwards and skid to a stop. With a fixed gear sans brakes, you rely on your legs to slow your pedals enough to stop.

My issue with fixed gear isn't about the "coolness" factor, nor the hipsters, but purely from a standpoint of safety. Alot of people who ride fixies don't have any brakes at all. Using a front brake is the fastest way to stop and forgoing it is stupid.

It is an IRO Cycles frame, fixed gear, without brakes, with cage pedals.

When you back pedal, the rear wheel spins backwards. (same as pedaling forward)

How the heck could you ride something like that?
Your feet would always be moving.
No coasting.
No quick stopping.

Is this a certain type of setup? Does it have a name?
Most fixed gear bikes I have seen can at least coast without pedaling.

Can a bike person fill in some terminology?

Yes, it's called a fixed gear bike.

Many fixed gear bikes are setup with a flip-flop hub that has fixed gear on one side and a freewheel on the other. Some bikes have only fixed gear, others have a freewheel hub only. You won't find a bike with a coaster hub without a rim brake though because there would be no way to stop it. With a fixed gear bike you obviously only have your legs to slow/stop you (unless you have a front brake). You cannot stop a fixed gear bike as quickly as you can stop a bike with front and rear rim brakes though (unless it has a front brake...some don't).

Yep, a ton of fun if you know how to ride one.

I'm pretty sure this is the fad everywhere else as well. 😕 It's funny watching these 'hipsters' put unreasonable gearing on their fixies and mash at 6rpm because they don't know any better. LOL
