FIXED: Audio issue on HTPC

Okay, so I have a weird issue on my HTPC that is driving me crazy. My Yamaha receiver shows which channels are active. I know when I first built my computer when I put in a DVD or Blu-Ray all the channels would come on, even on most HD TV shows they would all come on. Now I only get 2 channels showing up, unless I turn on Dolby Digital Live then I get all channels showing on the receiver all the time.

I can't figure out WTH happened, I am sure there is a setting that got messed up somewhere, but I can't find it.

When Dolby Digital Live is turned off, my receiver acts like it is only getting two channels of audio, but then the sounds sound correct. If I turn on Dolby Digital Live, the receiver acts like it is getting a signal on all channels, but then it sounds like crap and nothing comes out the center speaker. Also, if I try to run the Realtek's audio test without dolby on it only plays on the two fronts, with dolby on it will use all 6 speakers.

This is driving me crazy because I know it isn't right and I know it used to work.

The sound card is onboard realtek, with latest drivers
Using an optical connection to the receiver
Receiver is a Yamaha V-659
Tried MediaPortal and PowerDVD 9, using directsound: Realtek HD output as my audio option in MediaPortal.

Any ideas?

Every time I think I finally have everything working right on my HTPC, something breaks.

Sounds like a codec issue. What OS are you running? I've had good luck with AC3filter for passing AC3 through optical/toslink or HDMI to my receiver.

I agree with mc866. Here's an excerpt from the MediaPortal Install Guide on avsforum:

AC3Filter: For those that use SPDIF out on your systems, this is the best-performing audio decoder. Get it here: AC3Filter. Download and run the installer. Once it's installed, run it's configuration (in your Start Menu) and enable the "Use SPDIF" checkbox if you plan to pass-through all AC3 and DTS to your receiver.

That's exactly how I set mine up, and I use MediaPortal. I only watch OTA, but all the channels are passed through correctly. I can check some other settings tonight, but it'll probably be late.

I know I have the AC3Filter installed and had done that, but I installed some other stuff since then, so maybe it got screwed up. I'll check it when I get home.

Unfortunately I didn't notice the issue immediately so I can't trace back my setups.

BTW: OS is Win XP Pro SP3

I'm running Win XP Home SP3, so you should be able to get it to work by matching my setup. I'm pretty sure I installed the PowerDVD 9 trial version and pulled the codecs from that to use with my HD OTA, and I also have Realtek HD onboard audio, so it sounds like we have a pretty similar setup. I haven't touched my settings in months, so I can't remember all of them off the top of my head.

Okay, for some reason all my codecs got screwed up, probably because I had to install a codec pack to get the online videos to work.

I had to uninstall all my codecs and start over, now it is working right 🙂

Thanks for your help, I hadn't even thought about the codecs until you all brought it up.
