FIXBOOT OR FIXMBR??

drive has crashed, but i think it is software corruption, not hardware failure because drive spins with no unusual noises. was FAT32 under windows2000. one partition on 10gig fuji drive. cannot reinstall windows without formatting drive. cannot repair windows due to "unrecoverable errors." my questions are as follows: WHAT IS THE BEST DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE OUT THERE? THIS DRIVE HAS CORRUPTION TO THE POINT THAT IT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE PARTITION OR THE OS THAT WAS ON IT, THEREFORE, WHATEVER UTILITY YOU SUGGEST MUST WORK WITHOUT THE PARTITION INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE DRIVE. ALSO, WILL FIXBOOT OR FIXMBR HELP OR HURT THE DATA RECOVERY PROCESS? we are considering sending the drive out to a data recovery service, but that is beaucoup bucks and we'd like avoid that expense. but i read that many of these data recovery utilities are worthless and can render the data unrecoverable even by the data recovery services. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? THANX!

I didn't think there were any 10 Gig Fujitsu drives affected by the defective chip failure but it sounds like you have the defect since you say the drive is spinning.

Best bet is to find another working exact match of that drive and change out the electronics board, then you should be able to access your data fine and get it to a different drive.

Oh great, Fujitsu did something that you can't swap out boards, no ownder they are not swapping drives with anyone, this gets worse everyday. :disgust: :|

hey need 4 speed,

thanks so much for your insightful answer. i suppose postings such as yours are infinitely more beneficial to us all than my posting of a problem in three different forums. i see now how you got your "platinum member" status. btw, posting in multiple forums is for those people that may be browsing one forum but not another.
