Fix for dropping internet connections

I finally found the fix to my losing my internet connection problem. I wanted to share this as it was a really hard problem to resolve and it might help some folks fix their problem.

I did two things at the same time and I'm not sure which action fixed my problem. So all I ask in return if this post helps you fix your problem is that you reply with which action fixed your problem so I can get a clue to what my "actual" fix was.

My symptoms were:
1. Internet Explorer "Web page cannot be displayed" after browsing for about 5 - 10 minutes.
2. Firefox "Server not found" after browsing for about 5 - 10 minutes.
3. Outlook Express would not retrieve email upon opening. Had to try repeatedly or run IE or FF then open OE again to get it to work.

When items 1 or 2 above happened, every attempt to access a different web page thereafter would result in the same error message.

THE FIX:

1. I installed Spybot search & destroy 1.5 and removed all of the spyware it found.

2. I noticed in the Task Manager Processes (ctrl-alt-del) that a process named HPTLBXFX.EXE was constantly updating its ram usage. I suspected that this might be the culprit. A search on the web revealed that the HPTLBXFX.EXE is a HP Toolbox printer driver. I have a HP 3390 all-in-one laser printer. I downloaded the latest driver for the 3390 printer from the HP website, removed the current 3390 driver and installed the latest 3390 driver for the scanner & printer plug & play.

After doing both actions, all of my internet connections are now fixed. Which action fixed it I have no clue though I suspect it was the HP 3390 driver. I have no desire to go back to the old 3390 driver to find out. If either step helps you fix your problem, please let me know as I am very curious which one might have fixed mine.

Umm, if Spybot found anything (sans cookies) and removed them, that was your problem.

Just a heads up -- Spybot 1.5 has a bug that causes extremely slow loading on some systems, including mine. So far, the best fix seems to be to go back to version 1.4, which is still being supported with updates.

Welcome to AT network Forum.

In order to give you further help you need to post how you are connected to the Internet.

It is hard to know whether you actually lose your connection or the Network stack is "broken".

Try this process, http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html#refreshnet

Hopefully.

After cleaning it is a good practice to refresh the Network stack, coz many Spywares can leave behind open ended hooks.

Thanks all for your interest. Spybot 1.5 has not affected loading on my system so I think I'll leave it on and see what happens. I'll try the network stack cleanup if anything unusual starts happening.

Hope someone with the error symptoms I had tries the fixes one at a time and posts his/her results. BTW, I didn't get notified that there were replies to my original post. Is there an email notification option for subscribed to threads on these forums? (am a new registered user).

Thanks,

Found how to do this.
