You know, that may just explain it. At 2048x1536 they are exactly double the linear resolution or 4X the areal resolution.

Still, that would tend to complicate the scaling for an HD movie UNLESS they don't scale and merely use the inner 1920 by 1080 pixels. Doing that they'd lose almost a half inch in width for HD playback.

They'd probably have it so the black bars would be on the top and bottom. 16:9 in a tablet is not good because 16:9 mostly only works for movies and not everyone watches movies all the time.

No, 16:9 isn't a good aspect ratio but I think for a more portable device 4:3 is too square. I think 3:2 would be better and if the width was 1920 that would be 1280 high. As I've said before, I think the iPad is too large and 7" is too close to smart phones so, for me, 8.5 inch screen would be preferred. So, with a 3:2 ratio I'd be looking at a display that's 7.1X4.7 in a package that has outside physical dimensions of 8.5X5.5 or a sheet of 11X8.5 paper folded in half.

A tab of those dimensions could be held on the edges with one hand...
