Five Guys hype

i'm in the UK so .. some differences.

five guys is famous on the interwebz for the "dayum" video, so when i saw they had opened one in london, i went to try it.

new shop, extremely busy. take-away style, different look than but essentially same modus operandi as macdonald.

took 1 step towards the door, saw the board that says "burger: £8.50".

thats the end of my five guys experience.

and no, you can't convert that to dollars. here you can get a pint of guinnes and a burger with chips, salad and sauces for £4.99. a takeaway burger joint will do a double quarter pounder for £3.00 and macdonalds has the cheeseburger down to £1.

£8.50 is what you pay for a handmade burger of top class grass fed beef in a posh gastro-bistro.

The "little" burger is that standard burger. It's huge. The others are probably double / triple.

I'm not going to be snobbish and think that my opinion matters much, but we just got a CFA here. It is ALWAYS jam packed, two drive thru lanes always appear busy. Have eaten in the dining area two or three times and the staff seem to do their best to keep up with the utter chaos, which is to be commended.

Problem is, I'm just not a big fan of their food. I love hamburgers though, so those cows of theirs can go to hell. That is all.

Clean cut. Polite without exception. Men and women. All races. Most are very young. Some upper-middle age people too. If I eat inside, they walk BY The table occasionally and ask if I want them to refill my drink, or ask if I need salt/ketchup/napkins/etc.

Orders are extremely precise. Most fast food in the my town, it's nearly impossible to get an order right. It sounds like I'm exaggerating, but it's almost impossible to get an order filled properly at any other fast food place in town...no matter how simple the order. That's just the way fast food is here. CFA is the opposite. In all the years I've been there, they've only gotten it "wrong" one time when I didn't get a straw. That's amazing!

Yep, totally agree. There was a time I went through their drive thru and the guy was SO freaking friendly and helpful that I almost looked around for a hidden camera. They've never strayed from that either.

I never liked their food much either. I don't get their hype. Their nuggets are good but expensive.

I get an odd aftertaste from CFA's sandwiches.. but I get that same aftertaste from most FF chicken. Their grilled chicken is fine though. Love their salads but they're way too expensive.

CFA is not too expensive, at least not to the point that it is hindering demand (locally). I actually wish they would raise prices so they could eventually stop needing a police presence to direct traffic around our local CFA.

They've both offered hot dogs. There are reasons they don't offer them anymore.

Also, completely different demographics. Five guys is growing like crazy while McD is on a sales slump

Damn. I can eat pretty darned healthy on only $5 a day.

When I do indulge in a $10 cheeseburger, it's from a diner on a platter copiously filled with steak fries, onion rings, coleslaw, pickles, red onions, tomato and lettuce or enough for two entire meals. Although they don't have a fancy marketing budget to maintain.

Had a Five Guys cheeseburger and fries for dinner tonight (Detroit) and it was worth every penny of the $12 it cost me.

I drank an unsweetened iced tea with it, so I figure I did OK .... lol.

I only hit Five Guys when I am on the road for work. We have a really awesome local burger place at home that is always way busier than the local Five Guys.

Different class of place, different requirements. We have tons of good pubs with good burgers around here, but I can be in and out of Five Guys in a half hour, tops. So I think it falls into that "fast casual" category whereas a pub is "casual dining."

Five Guys' burgers are okay but the buns are too big*. The fries I don't eat so can't rate. The time from order to serving is on the long side for fast food. The price is in line with other burger joints with big burgers.

*Maybe they have a lettuce wrap low carb style? Don't know.

Well living in the LA area you definitely can't get a burger fries and beer at a bar for the same price.

$10 for fries and drink is pretty normal. A McDonalds combo is around $7-9. Hell my Subway sandwich with no drink is at $7-8.

A burger and a beer at a bar around here would hit about $20.

Agree 100%, that's been my experience at CFA as well. They do a fantastic job instilling customer service concepts in everyone that works there. At most other places, it's obvious the person working there is just there because they haven't found something better yet, and it's reflected in their service. I doubt CFA pays much better, but the people working there always have a great attitude.

I don't go for that much fast food, but CFA and Five Guys are definitely at the top of my list for that.
