I have been hearing and reading Five Guys hype for a long time and I finally tried it. Good thing I had not fell for the hype, I wouldn't even put it in my top 5 if I had to make a list. It straight up tasted like a home made burger and it was not bad or anything though. The fries did really disappoint the most, so meh.

Next I need to try Chipolte to see how reality compared to interweb hype

They're crap. How they have a store (or a few?) in/around London I'll never know. They're not in a top 40 list for me and I can't name 40 burger joints.

Hope the Brits don't think this is what all US burger joints are like.

Don't like Chipotle either.

I've still never been there myself to be honest, but I do not go to burger joints a lot these days and like the homemade ones myself I suppose.

I was there the day they opened the first one in London. The line was stretched around the block and people seemed to love it.

Calling 5 Guys crap is a bit much.

Calling them VERY over-rated on the other hand is right on target,

Five Guys isn't crap, but it sells bland fried burgers. Barely a step up from McDonald's IMO. Was quite disappointed after all the praise ATOT gave it. There's better burger joints out there. Even run of the mill Harvey's is better, and cheaper too. They flame grill theirs.

We've gone a long way in this thread and no one has mentioned the other supposed amazing chain.

Not sure where you are located, but Penn Station is another hype worth trying. Much better than Subway. Chalk me up in the "Five guys is underwhelming camp as well.

Every new joint that opens up in town gets hyped up locally at least for a bit. We just got a Culver's and Chick-fi-la this past year. They were jammed pack for about a month then died down to hardly anyone there. Everyone always goes back to McD's by default. Most new FF places here get enough to scrape by but that's about it. McD's is always backed up all the way out in the road at lunch time and evenings. If Five guys comes here, it'll be the same way over again.

You know burgers are only going to taste so good for a competitive price. People want a charcoal grilled thick burger but don't want to pay $20 for it so you end up with cookie cutter foods at cookie cutter taste. Each chain has to rely completely on seasonings and condiments to differentiate themselves and cheap wins every single time.

I just tried it fr the first time a few weeks and I was also disappointed. It was a decent burger, but I expected so much more.

You will be disappointed in Chipolte. It just isn't good, and I never understood the hype. If you value authentic Mexican burritos, Chipolte will not even come close.

Do we really need a "My tastes don't align with the general public's tastes" thread?

I don't find it good for the price, recently I had Smashburger for the 1st time. JEBUS it was good, it was pricey like Five Guys, but imho was on another level taste wise.

Apparently any time someone ventures out of their house we need a thread about how awful the real world is.

I can't believe you even thought to question this. Its ATOT, where a weekly thread such as this brings this same question to the unwashed masses. ^_^

The fries are usually pretty special, but they use a different potato supplier every week (written on a chalk board in the restaurant). I got lousy fries twice before. Usually, they're completely irresistible.

Yeah not sure why we need yet another thread on this there's got to be 50 already.

I think a lot of the hype is that people aren't used to eating fairly plain burgers. Go most places now and the burgers are covered in all sorts of shit with all manner of sauce drizzled all over them. I know you can get a bunch of toppings at Five Guys, but it was normal straightforward stuff. It's more like a good home grilled burger and I think not a lot of people get that these days which is why some people like it so much.

I liked it, but it's definitely high priced, but I'd take it over most others, especially with the fries.

I think it also depends on the individual place, as there are some good ones and bad ones.

I don't find it good for the price, recently I had Smashburger for the 1st time. JEBUS it was good, it was pricey like Five Guys, but imho was on another level taste wise.

My experience is very different. The time I had Smashburger it was the worst burger, bar none, that I've had. Well not quite, there was one time ordered a burger at a mom and pop restaurant and there was blood all over the plate and bun because they barely cooked the damn thing (and then the idiots send it back out on the same plate and blood soaked bun after cooking it). But other than that Smashburger was the worst burger, even beating out a horrible burger I had at Applebee's (I know, I hate them too but some friends wanted to eat there for some stupid reason even though there's a Chili's a block away that is always better in every way). It was like bad fast food bad, was more like cheap shitty sausage patty. Fries were terrible too (ordered some special ones so can't say how their normal ones are). And on top of that it was heinously expensive. Might've just been a bad experience or something but I've been hesitant to try them again. Even looking at their site half the burgers look like they just scraped roadkill and cooked it, they don't form actual patties much. Really hate that as the patty will fall apart as you eat it and you'll get stringy gristle parts.

Five Guys: The Cajun fries are good, meh on the rest. I can't eat gluten, so no bun for me, so my experience has been a lettuce-wrapped burger. The burgers are extremely bland. I also can't do dairy, so no cheese, so I'd imagine the bun & cheese are what makes the burgers good, since all of my friends love eating there but I could pass. BurgerFi has WAY better food, but they aren't very widespread yet.

Chipotle: Wasn't impressed. You can make the same thing at home just as easy, and have it taste waaaaaay better. I mean, it's not bad, it's just not as great as everyone was making it out to be.
