I never really understood the idea of NOT taking time off then cashing out.
I'm osrry but my free-time and living life is worth more to me than some cash out.

When you're accruing 25 days a year plus all the holidays it's hard not to have PTO left. I usually time my vacations around paid holidays so PTO doesn't get depleted.

Yeah, that is fairly true. I get 20 days plus all federal holidays, but I also get comp hours for work in excess of 8 hrs a day. With that, it's really hard to not have at least a week at any given time.

I do take my time off, though. At least a week at Christmas and a week in the summer, plus some random trips.

It's not hard at all. You just take days/weeks off. :)

I have reached the point where my accrual is maxed and they've stopped adding PTO and I still can't take time off. I'm basically losing several days of pay each month. :( Unfortunately my boss hasn't let me cross-train anyone on my tools and it makes it impossible for me to take more than a day off at a time, or be away from my blackberry/internet connection for more than a few hours.

IMO you are being taken advantage of. in this situation YOU have bargaining power. they need YOU, not the other way around. why would they want you to train other people when YOU are working for FREE.

Been looking for another job for the last few months. I only have the bargaining power if I can walk away (which I will do, bargain or no, when I find an acceptable alternative.)

If we don't use our PTO, we lose it. No option to cash out.

good for you! and yeah thats absolutely true, you have to be willing walk to really take a stand. but based on what you have described I think your employer would not let it get close it that. I have seen far to often where good employees are overworked just because they don't pushback.
