Fist post w/ Linux box

HeHe, it's the same pointless topic I posted back in July when I got my first box up and running. Congratulations!🙂

<not on linux box>
I have, well a simple question: How do I install things? (mainly i want to know because of rc5)
(I keep wanting to do DOS commands, but some how they dont work 😉 )

Edit: not like it matters, but it might, the linux version is: Red Hat 7.0

ls = dir
try man [command]
man ls will tell you more about the ls command

cd should work

to install the dnetc client go download the right client, and in the directory u saved it un, i believe its tar -xzf (the complete client file name)

i would definitely try some books
some dos commands work if you type x first, or was it m?? my gosh, i'm getting old...
such as xcopy? or mcopy? i gotta use that more often..
i used to use them, but than i started getting used to the real commands...
cp = copy
mv = move
really need a book... hehe..
actualy, i ahve a few, so if you need another command, just pm me

du is pretty kewl, = disk usage
chmod is to change access settings... definetly try man chmod b4 u go screwing aroudn with that.

You know that Ms. Penguin had to make an appearance here!

Glad you made the first step away from the dark side of the force... 😉

If you keep wanting to do DOS commands, then you'll love doing stuff in *nix terminals... 😉

When you're ready to get RC5 running, just ask here and someone will walk you through it... In fact, you might want to check this thread to get some idea about adding a shortcut on your desktop to run RC5 (especially since the Mandrake described there is a "Red Hat&quot😉... 🙂

Just couldn't wait until I got home, eh? 😛

Don't blame ya, I wouldn't wait either. 😉

Good work on getting it up and running! 😀

We're a Linux household now. 🙂

(I guess I got used to putting on that stocking, so I figured what the heck, might as well go for broke and load Linux too, so I had MrFluffy do it! Hehe 😉😉)

😀

<On Linux box>
I can barlly read this (on a 12' b/w mon), but thax for the help, i have to play around w/ the download thinngy so i can download dnet. well i have to eat now 🙁 and i will resume tinkering w/ this thing in a few min. (or i just might wait for Ray).

I did use Netscape, but the window that poped up was confusing at first, (and i found out i had to be logged in under root) but all is clear now, this linux thing isnt hard, its a matter of getting used to how it works....

CONGRATS Mr Fluffy----the last time i tried linux i was on dialup and couldn't get the modem to work. maybe now that im on cable i'll give it another go🙂

WoooMooo!

We're DNET guys and we're ok,
We Linux all night and we Windows all day.
We do RC5, we do OGR, but we don't hang around in a bar,
'Cause the old man Ray wears a stocking, just like his dear mammar...

Getting Linux up and running wasn't quite as bad as having to wear a compression stocking because of the leg clot. Almost, but not quite. 😉😉

Of course we've only just begun.......

😉😉

[edit]temporarily changed my icon in honor of getting Linux up and running! 😀

Congrats, MrFluffy.
I'll be joining you soon. I have a K6-2 here waiting for a NIC that should be here any day now, and I downloaded Klinux and burned an image to diskette to run OGR on it...then I got to thinking. I have an extra SCSI card and drive, and I could swap in a CDRom long enough to load an OS....so I now I have a Mandrake CD coming in the mail. Soon I should be spennding more time in the basement surfing on the Linux box than I am up here 🙂
