Coworker was telling me about how he went charter fishing over the weekend and how he brought a banana with him, unknowing that it is supposed to be bad luck. They made him toss the peel overboard. Anyone else follow this superstition?

I've read about it, but never seen it in practice when I've gone out in the ocean. I think it dates back to some ship(s) that entered port carrying bananas and the crew was dead. I think it has something to do with spiders in the crates or something of that sort.

I saw something once where a captain in some fishing competition would walk around and throw bananas into the boats of other people as a joke.

Its interesting all the ideas on the origins of the superstition: http://www.azinet.com/captjim/bananas.htm.

I had a hunting friend tell me that eating a banana in the hunting blind was bad luck. About 30% of the time the days aren't good, but I bring a banana about 80% of the time.

I have one of my own. My wife got me a nice little fish cleaning kit years ago and the very first time I took it I caught a monster. Been bringing it ever since and have yet to get skunked. It's the good luck charm.

Are banana hammocks bad luck too? There's nothing like catching the breeze on a fast moving vessel while sporting one of those!

Last trip, someone brought a banana on board. As soon as they threw it over, I got hot and landed fish on every drop. Coincidence? I think not!
