fishing hurts

I've been an avid fisherman all my life. Recently, however, I'm finding it difficult to ignore all of the articles regarding the intelligence of fish and their ability to feel pain.

Unfortunately, my evening's googling led me to fishinghurts.com which, although it appears to be the work of PETA, does cite a number of scientific studies that appear to confirm that fish do feel pain.

Don't get me wrong, I have no plans to give up my fishing habit any time soon, and I like my steak medium rare. I'm just looking for a little commentary on the other side of this coin... unless this is now a generally accepted fact?

Interesting side note... on the fishinghurts website, under the FAQ, in response to the Jesus as fisherman question is a discussion of our bodies as temples that should not be polluted by the consumption of those filthy contaminated little fishies, otherwise known as those magnificent swimming intellectuals throughout the rest of the site. So much for WWJD...

Whether they feel pain or not is kind of a pointless argument, they've been cheated out of dinner, hooked in the mouth, dragged from their home into air they can't breathe, & manhandled by someone outweighing them by an order of magnitude.

Pain or no pain it's certainly not something you'd wish on a person.

Then again, it's not a person.

Fish away.

bears eat fish. if the fish feel pain, then they feel pain when the bears are fishing too. but i dont see bears all up in arms about it, so why should i be?

If you'll eat a steak, you have no defensible position for not eating a fish.

Sure you do. it's called TASTE.
Some people like beef, but don't necessarely care for the taste of fish.

blah, blah, blah....

Clearly I was speaking about moral perspective. Granted if you don't like the taste of fish you have a reason not to eat it. What are you, in fourth grade?

I'm sure the cow, hog, sheep, turkey, ostritch, bison, bear, turtle, frog, kangaroo, alligator, duck, goose, crawfish, eel, opossum, deer, rabbit, squirrel, quail, dog, snake and chickens also feel pain...
But they still end up on the table. 🙂

 (saves this in the back of his mind for when someone else mentions something like this)

Pretty much can't trust anything that's even remotely associated with PETA. Fish away 🙂

On a completely unrelated note, I had a dream I was fishing last night and caught a gigantic salmon.

Yes, the fish certainly feel pain. However, this is no reason for you to stop fishing. My brother-in-law also is fishing for pleasure (he catch the fish and release them). I find this less cruel than fishing and keeping/killing the fish
