They're also different colors - either predominantly white or black, and they don't have red eyes like that.

FWIW. here's a crappie.

Not a record, for sure, but the best one I've ever caught. :)

Fishy!

Doing a brief Google search, it seems that it could be a Red Eye Bass, Spotted Bass, or Smallmouth. I'm unfamiliar with those, and I can't find any good pics. I caught two of them with medium sized cranks, in about 15' of water in southern Michigan. (Diamond Lake)

They both had blood red eyes, and small bass-like mouthes.

Any help?

Update:

Second Bass

Appears to be a rock bass! Great reseach guys!

Link, thanks to NTB!

First thing I thought of was Rock Bass, and I don't even fish. Not popular around you?

I guess not. I used to fish in mostly ponds and small lakes. Must be a fish that common to bigger lakes.

I like catching new fish! :)

Where in the country were you fishing?

Some of the lake impoundments have what is known as hybrid stripped bass(rock fish).

this looks like what you have caught. I know in the local lakes around here we have the hybrid strippers that can't reproduce. this is by design so they don't overpopulate the lakes and eat all the other fish.

I'm betting hybrid........

Yeah, rock bass... they're very common in small bodies of water. Difficulty to eat though, way too many small bones.

They're called "rock bass" around here. They are actually members of the sunfish family (blue gills, etc). Not sure if they are called rock bass everywhere. I catch them all the time, sometimes on worms while fishing for panfish, and I had one in the local harbor on Lake Michigan take my 1/2oz spoon when I was fishing for salmon.
