A compound produced from fish oil that appears to target leukemia stem cells could lead to a cure for the disease, according to Penn State researchers. The compound -- delta-12-protaglandin J3, or D12-PGJ3 -- targeted and killed the stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, in mice, said Sandeep Prabhu, associate professor of immunology and molecular toxicology in the Department of Veterinary and Medical Sciences. The compound is produced from EPA -- Eicosapentaenoic Acid -- an Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and in fish oil, he said.

"Research in the past on fatty acids has shown the health benefits of fatty acids on cardiovascular system and brain development, particularly in infants, but we have shown that some metabolites of Omega-3 have the ability to selectively kill the leukemia-causing stem cells in mice," said Prabhu. "The important thing is that the mice were completely cured of leukemia with no relapse."

There's a lot of fail in that article. The picture is of a protein, not the compound they're talking about.

Edit: Nevermind, they're showing the prostaglandin host-guest complex. Not sure why they even need the protein in there, but whatever. Do they have any idea what protein is responsible for the production of said metabolite?

Oh, I thought the picture was of birthday confetti being shot.
The prostaglandin is the little structure in that picture (the pentagon with the two arms coming off it). Funny but true: prostaglandins were huge synthetic targets in the 60's-80's, have many interesting medicinal properties, and are so named because they are primarily produced in the prostate. Get a load of them!

Pun intended.

What if I applied prostaglandins as frosting on a cake. Would I get in trouble?

I'm jealous of them too, so I will rag on their pic.

I wasn't ragging on the researchers (whom I'm not jealous of in the least, good for them). I'm ragging on the journalist. I guess I half expect people who write about something to have a small, reasonable amount of knowledge of the material they're writing about.

If I wrote a story describing the discovery of a new species of butterfly or some such thing and then showed you a pic of a hippo, you'd snicker a bit too.

been taking fish oil and flaxseed oil tablets for years, never had the flu or was sick since then. they do make you poop like a bear though.

I've neither been sick nor had the flu in years, either.

And I have consistently drinked heavily.

I argue that massive quantities of alcohol is the true ward of sickness.

So what fish oil mail order site did this come from?
Buy one and get three free? gesh....

I'll tell you what works putting leukemia into remission, and may actually cure some types of leukemia, and that is the drug Gleevec. $166 per pill, taken once a day, for life.
CLM leukemia, the same type of leukemia actor Ryan O'Neal lives with. But he can afford $5000 a month.
