Fish oil capsules makes my kidneys hurt. WHY?

JEDI

Lifer
I started taking fish oil capsules (1000mg Omega3 enteric coated).

the 1st time i took one, my kidneys started hurting that nite. i've also been drinking alot that day too, so i thought it was the combo of both.

a couple of days later, i took my 2nd fish oil capsule. again kidneys started hurting a few hrs later.

i threw away the bottle. (it was shrink wrapped when i bought it from walmart, so i dont think it's been tampered with.)

but why did it make my kidneys hurt?

Maybe its too much fish oil for your kidneys to process? Perhaps a smaller pill? Or you could get your omega 3s from a natural source instead of a processed pill?

"Ah, no no, you want 'Plainsborough Hospital'...but we help you, no problem."

"Doctor Casa, usted tienes otro paciente!"

signs of slight or oncoming proegressive kidney disease?
You might just be filtering normally now, but the extra strain caused problems.
if it causes you to urinate blood (pink or dark urine) or protein (foamy urine - rootbeer foamy) you should consider having a test to determine your level of kidney function.

LOL. I was thinking that same thing... except isn't the line "It's never lupus."?

Also, how does one know that one's kidney/ies are hurting. Did you pull them out to check or something? 😕

Actually, research has shown that fish oil helps kidney disorders. Both of my dogs have acute kidney disease and both of them take 1000mg of Fish Oil(from Costco) twice a day. Both of them have improved from it.

I also take them with no issues.

LOL at the House comments.

On a serious note, I'm baffled that the fish oil pills are causing you discomfort. I've been taking them for years with absolutely no adverse effects.

Yeah, I take fish oil with no problem. And I take it with ginkgo biloba, 5-htp, and a multivitamin. Hell, I take 2000mg of fish oil, though that's only giving me like 600mg combined of EPA/DHA. Feel like I should be getting more Omega 3's from 2000mg (2 caps), but whatever.

Except, myself and others are using the same brand with no issues.

Oh yeah I was just neffin. 😛 Fish oil sold in the USA is almost all scrutinized to the point that it should be hard to find a brand that has any traces of mercury or other such crap in fish.

It's the individual, not the product. And I suspect there is something else very much unrelated, because fish oil shouldn't be touching the kidneys anyhow right?

Studies actually show that fish oil can be helpful for kidney disorders.

This is why.

Don't take fish oil. Take a flax or flax w/borage supplement if you really want those omega fatty acids. Fish oil spoils.

I think its his gall bladder. The gall produces bile to digest fat... and fish oil is pretty much 100% fat.

Well... that would be the Omega 3's wouldn't it? Just the essential fatty acids, which would have already traversed a lot of the body before getting to the kidneys if I remember the body at all correctly.
The EFAs have been linked to basically being damn good for you, able to help with numerous disorders, or possibly even prevent them if you have enough of them as a kid.

We as a species, in modern civilizations, have a serious lack of EFAs in general, some individuals not so much but on average. EFAs are something our body can use almost everywhere by breaking it down to different byproducts, everywhere from creating some endocannibinoids (iirc) to even the lipids used in cells.

So yeah, without having read any specific journals regarding kidney disorders and EFAs, I'd reckon they could definitely be helpful.
