Not sure if I'll get an answer here but since ATOT seems to know a little about most things...

I have an allergy to *some* fish. There's no pattern to it that I can discern. It's neither the species nor the method of preparation.

e.g. one day I eat smoked salmon I'll be totally fine. The next day I try some from a different source, it causes almost immediate inflammation of my mouth/lips (not pleasant and possibly dangerous?). No reaction at all to shellfish, only to real "fish" e.g. salmon, halibut.

Anyone have a guess at what it is that I'm allergic to? I have a feeling it's not the fish itself but some additive.

I would avoid fish completely. I'm the same way.

Honestly, that inflammation is angiodema, which is deadly. I had an anaphylatic reaction right after experiencing angiodema. My throat closed up and I almost died.

Don't eat fish again. Seriously. It gets worse every time.

 sounds unpleasant.

I definitely do avoid fish. It's just something that I've always been curious about. But now I'll avoid it extra careful (kind of hard to do cuz everyone eats seafood here).

It was very unpleasant. I would see an allergist if it has become an integral part of your diet.

Reactions begin with proteins. Certain proteins are mistaken as a foreign substance and your body releases histamines where contact occurred with the protein. Soon the histamines go all over creating rashes, hives and swelling of the entire body.

Luckily it slipped by your throat and didn't make it swell like your lips.

Yeah, avoid fish until you've consulted with an allergist as to what you can and cannot eat. My BIL is fine with Tuna, but Mahi-Mahi nearly killed him.

I just avoid fish completely now. Even before I developed this allergy, fish was something I rarely ate because I actually don't like most of it. Guess I should just stick with the plan. Thanks for the info.

The mackrel family is the only fish that's ever given me problems.

Overall, I LIKE seafood, fish, shrimp, lobster, etc., but don't care for most of the shellfish.
