FirstUSA 5% Amazon rebate can work for Circuit City

FYI,
I've had a FirstUSA (now BankOne) VISA eCard for about a year or so. With this card you are eligible to get 5% cash back at a limited number of online retailers (see here for a list). Amazon is one of the retailers but Circuit City isn't.

In December I ordered a Kodak DC3200 camera from Circuit City through Amazon using the in-store pickup option. Well I just got my credit card bill and it shows a $60 charge from Amazon and a $3 eCard rebate. Looks like that, since Amazon is the billing agent for the purchase, that they will credit your account for the 5% rebate.

I wasn't sure if this was well known but I thought I'd post it for consideration.

Keep in mind that this will only work if you buy from Circuit City through the Amazon web site using one of these eCards. To apply, start
here and click on the 'eCard VISA' link.

WARNING! Don't trust FirstUSA. They have lawsuits against them for raising interest rates and charging late fees due to their own bad accounting programs. I will never use a FirstUSA/Bank One card again.

Yeah, FirstUSA can be a problem. I actually had two 5% rebate type VISAs. One through FirstUSA directly and the other through Wingspanbank.com. It turns out that the Wingspan VISA was also serviced by FirstUSA.

I once tried to pay the FirstUSA bill via ACH (direct from my bank account) the day before the bill was due. I got a $29 late fee posted to the card so I called them. They explained that some banks don't do a transfer but actually cut a paper check and send it out (?!). I said, "Duh, what?" and they reversed the charge. So much for electronic payments. They later sent me a letter saying they were going to raise the 9.99% rate. I simply followed the instructions in their letter to cancel the account and continued to pay the balance off at 9.99%. The card I still have was the original Wingspanbank.com (again, it's serviced by FirstUSA) and they haven't raised the rate.

It won't be an issue for me since I just use that one card for the 5% rebate sites.

I guess you may want to avoid hopping on this deal if you don't intend to pay the balance off each month.
