"For the first time since the U.S. attacks in Afghanistan began, a member of the U.S. military has been killed by hostile fire.

A senior U.S. official said the military member was killed in a gunbattle today in eastern Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan. The official said an undetermined number of other U.S. troops were injured. "

To be optimistic, we should at least be glad that American military casualties have remained minimal throughout this conflict.
