Just did a quick look and Southwest has actually earned $124 million in the first half of the year - running an airline can still be profitable. Hopefully the downfall of some of the bigger carriers will allow the smaller, more efficient ones to gain a foothold.

I am kinda getting sick of everyone complaining about ticket prices. You wouldn't believe how thin the margins already are. I mean, if you think you can do it better, by all means buy a fleat of $50 million+ airplanes, maintain them, and hire all the employees needed to staff them. Running an airline simply ain't cheap!

He wasn't really complaining......

Anyway, I would never think about starting an Airline.....Like you said, its not exactly a high profit venture, and there's so much capital involved, which could all potentially become worthless, for example, as soon as those things in Star Trek are invented!

If you go and check out Boeing's website you'll see that all of the mainstream planes are in the neighborhood of $100 million+
Then of course there's the cost of jet fuel, and maintenence which is especially important considering the amount of people these airlines fly. To top it off they have to pay the pilots like 300k a year because of the unions.

Makes me wonder how any of the airlines ever made any profit at all.

christ, settle. i was just saying it isn't cost effective for me to fly most places rather than drive. I do realize that they profit margins are very minimal. and who said i could do better?

Well I quit flying not because of the prices, they are CHEAP but because of the unreasonable and not very effective screening procedures they are using. I have flown over a million miles and have frequent flier cards from all the major airlines.
Arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before a 2 hour flight and miss the flight because of 3 searches, all made within the same concorse, the airline then charged me 50 bucks to change my flight. They looked in my wallet for christ sake what did they expect to find there, a stick of dynamite or maybe even a pipe bomb. If you complain they arrest you and take you to jail for disordly conduct.
Tlhe airlines need to hire some competant screeners, I went through DIA and the woman doing the x-ray scanning was reading a paperback book while bags were going through.

hope your right. but where else could the man go? we searched the entire western border. Bin Laden has owned property in that country before, the border is very porous, and it would be the safest place for him to go as he enjoys a lot of support there. The afghans have had the hell bombed out of them, they are more concerned about where they'll get their next meal rather than worrying about risking their lives to harbor bin laden. besides, we still don't have 100% free reign in Pakistan, and the N.W.F.P. has never really been patrolled well even by the Paks.

I have a hard time understanding this. They're losing billions every year and the federal government as well as investment banks give them billions in loans.

My business MAKES money and I cant get a loan. Amazing.
