Many folk say that flow order is unimportant other than the "res to pump" as the loop will reach a stable temp throughout its length,,, I don't know and don't care enough to run 2 or 3 temp probes in my loop to find out. My gut / instinct (and 30 years in the trades!) tells me things work best a certain way. Res above / to pump, (a dry pump doesn't work) to radiator, (removes heat including that generated by the pump) to CPU, (coolest possible water for best over-clock potential) then to NB and finally the GPU (vid cards do run hot but have higher tolerance for heat than the rest of the system).
Adding a second rad to your loop will help, even a single added anywhere except between the res and pump would make a difference provided it isn't a flow killer.

Sounds like you solved my conundrum of flow order for me really. I'll do that, and if I do get an extra radiator(it will probably be simultaneous with getting either another 4870, or a 4870x2); I will put it after the CPU and NB, and before the GPUs. Sound like a plan?

edit: note the PEX fittings have the inside edge chamfered, I do this to all my fittings and barb to lessen turbulence and flow restrictions, a little exsessive, no?

 I'm that sort of person too. Even though I know it will barely make a difference, it's the sum of all of these minor improvements that makes everything perform well overall! Ever heard of Kaizen?

trust me, my friend cam (skinnee) just did a nice review on it.

I even asked him to do a simple flow test, which is blowing into the barbs to see how much resistance it generated, and he said it was almost non existant.

So that means its a pretty decient performer. Also his graphs showed very good promise on the larger brothers.

3/8 tubing on 1/2 barbs... mmmmm..... thats gona be a PITA to slip on. HOT Water FTW!

you could of gotten away with 7/16 tubing. They make a nice seal also on 1/2barbs. Only slightly thicker too.

Ah well, you live and learn. At least if this is a major PITA this time, I won't make the same mistake next build (probably be an i7/NVIDIA, in a couple of years time when they are a bit cheaper).

A bit off-topic here, sorry... my dad is profiting from this upgrade, I finally have enough parts to build him a new pc! Considering his current pile of s*** pc from 2002, I think he'll love the MA790FX-DQ6 with a phenom 9500 and HD3870. Im chucking in my old EMU 0404 pci card too, its not a bad system for the £350 I'm asking for him.

Thats the beauty of continuously upgrading (though I'm not sure the big changes I make can count as "continuous small improvements" lol).

Flow order, seems a good plan to me, Whatever you do for rads keep in mind "more is better" you really can't have too much cooling. If you have space always get the bigger rad.

Kaizen? nope never heard of it, I'm not bi-lingual,,, just anal retentive....:disgust: it's a good practice as has been shown many times in history, too bad more folk on this rock don't learn from the past.

The 3/8" on 1/2' barbs is no mistake! You'll appreciate the look, just keep mom and any innocent ears out of harms way while your doing the job!

Lastly, YOU CHARGE DAD????!!
You turkey!😀

If I'd get paid,,
I'd charge my kids.....😉

Sorry for going silent on you all!

I've been down a rocky road of frying my mobo, having no pc for weeks, and finally I have watercooling but with an Athlon instead of a Phenom because I havent quite finished and the stock BIOS for the replacement mobo didnt support PhII so I needed to put an old proc in to flash the bios...however I ended up just yanking the CMOS out of the old board, sticking it in the new one and was good to go. Only problem now is that I have several assignments to word process for next week and I cant afford to risk having no PC at all! So for the time being, dual 3GHz athlon will suffice.

I did watercool the 4870, and have been folding proteins (F@H) on it since last thursday no problems, getting around 4000ppd and set to break my 100 000 points barrier tomorrow!

P.S. I decided I was being a d*ck and decided not to charge my dad for any of the stuff I did for him. Just means Im in debt now lol, fk it Im a student, Im meant to be!

Pete

Glad to hear you're running again however limited that may be.
As to your PS, you weren't being a d*ck, just a kid, sounds to me a kid that dad could be proud of. Dad owes you one,,, don't worry, we dads pay back in spades!😉
