I am going snowboarding in New Hampshire on saturday. I have never been skiing or snowboarding before. I am buying the lesson package... I assume this includes everything I need? Are the boots part of the deal? I mean, do you need special snowboarding boots? And I guess I'll need ski pants or something?
Anyone here like snowboarding? Is it difficult?

Well I am new to the board, but I have been snowboarding for about 5 years. I suggest that you call and check to see what the package includes. Also I would wear snow clothes that are water proof. The first time is always the hardest. You will be on your butt a lot, so you might want to bring a butt pad(hehe). Bring some Asprin for after your session.

As far as learning. It can be hard if you have not been skateboarding or surfing... You want to keep weight on your back foot and not be to far back or forward . Also remember heal-toe. This is the action your backfoot should be making. And don't start on the bunny slopes, start on the Green or Blue... Speed is your friend...but tress are not.. Good Luck...

there's first time for everything....

yes, the lesson package should MOST likely include all the things you need - the board and the boots (they don't expect a newbie to own all the equippment do they?)
and if you are a skiier, it includes the poles, skis (ah, parabolics SUCKS!), boots.

you can also only rent the boots for snowboarders, not sure for skiiers.

i ski, no snowboards, so I don't know how hard it is, but IMO Ski is easier to start, coz you are going straight, not sideways...

hehe, I was hoping the snow would break my falls and I could leave my butt pad behind this time. Of course, it would be my luck that I manage to hit a tree or something. :D

Here are a few things to bring.

Wear two pair of heavy socks
Have waterproof gloves
Don't wear blue jean
Wear nylon or some other waterproof material pants
Use Scotchguard
Get some ski goggles
Get a full face/head stocking cap (the type with just a small hole cut out for you to breathe) The type burglers wear!
Wear layers of clothing
Expect to be very soar for a few days afterwards

Make sure you dress in layers to stay dry and warm. The outermost layer should be waterproof, you can buy Nickwax to waterproof you coat and pants. Prepare to be on your butt the first day alot. It gets better, I have been snowboarding for 8 years and love it.

It is VERY rough the first time but as soon as you get the hang of it (and you will) it is much better than skiing. I skied for 8 years and then the past 4 I have snowboarded and I think it is a heck of alot more fun! Hang in there and check with the place you are going to see exactly what they provide :)

I recently went snowboarding for the first time too ... I believe somebody posted a link to my thread already ...

my advice:
learn to fall on your face - this is important - my butt still hurts.
waterproof is good
speed is your best friend and worst enemy - go slow if you don't like hurtin wipeouts, go fast if you don't want to wipeout as much ...

don't get discouraged!

I have done both skied and snowboard.I still prefer skiing over snowboarding (my knuckels hurt from dragging LOL )
I think it is easier to learn how to snowboard then ski.
The snowboards float over the POW POW better.

as far as skier is suck and snowboard is suck this is the way I see it
if you are a knuckel dragger (snowboarder) and think you are better than a skier I think you have to
match equipment,if I ski on 205cm skies then your snowboard sould be the same lenght if you claim that you can snowboard
better than I ski. If you want to be on your short board (50cm) and do all those half pipe tricks then I should be on
a short ski also.

Update: The trip was postponed till tommorrow...

I am thinking it will be cold on the mountain, so I will wear a tshirt or two, and a sweatshirt, and a coat, and pants and swishy pants and waterproof pants... and gloves, and a hat, and some heavy socks and a pair of boots... anything I'm forgetting? (well yah, I was planning on wearing underwear... ;)) ....hmm, also I'll prolly need a hat of some sort....

yeah.. there is such a thing as snowboard boots.. you need em to be able to snowboard. Snowboarding boots are just boots, but they are stiff, big, heavy and EXPENSIVE. I think that they will be included. Snowboarding is super fun, as it is super not-fun. First day is miserable.. will have no fun.. will feel stupid for being on your ass the whole day.. definately start on the not-bunny hill. Go check out the snowboard park to see what's it's all about.. you should see some pretty cool stuff there.. I went snowboarding yesturday actually, been doing it for a while, it's the best sport EVER! for me... fluid, be fluid.

UPDATE: Just got back... wow, that was fun! yah, I am quite bruised... fell a lot... I was nice and warm though, the sun was shining down, and it was not cold under all of the layers... the only real problem I ran into was that F#$@#!* J-Bar lift thingy.... !!!!! :| I never did make it all the way up the hill, but once I was able to grab on again after falling off... and 3 times in a row I fell off at the beginning... Also, I had a difficult time stopping, so my method was to completely and utterly wipe out whenever I started going too fast, lost control, or was going to bump into someone...
