Hey guys, this is my first post here, I've been a longtime anandtech browser over the years. My current CPU is an Athlon 64 3700+ 2.4 Ghz SOcket 754. I am about to do an upgrade, and I thought about just getting the EPoX Socket 754 Board with SLI.

With DX 10 coming around the corner do you guys think it would be wise to invest in a 7600 GT or 7900GT. I only play in 1024x768 resolution because it looks best on my 17" Flatscreen CRT monitor I have.

I just got a great job outta college, and have a good amount of upgrade money. I still think my Athlon 64 3700+ is a good CPU, but go ahead and give me some advice if you think I should ditch it, and sell off on ebay.

I'm a long time AMD user, but I'm open to Conroe. Give any suggestions you like, glad to finally check out the forums!

ditch the 3700+. What's your budget for a new comp?

I'd like to keep it around 600 bucks. I could go higher if needed. Only thing I plan on keeping is the Hard Drives. I just bought this new Samsung a couple months ago.

I'll be back later on to check this thread out. Have to go teach an A+ course at this Tech Center. Thanks for the advice, I'm one of those people who tortures themselves over making a decision and going with it. LOL, I like to listen to opinions and etc.

To Bradtechonline,

You have a very nice rig but socket 754 is a dead end. But the one thing totally missing on this thread is why you need to upgrade---being state of the arts
doesn't even last enough time to get the parts shipped to you. You upgrade your computer when the one you have can't do the job in MHO.

Even if you have lots of money---there are no lack of vendors who would like to relieve you of your money woes.---who and where is the that Jones family you
feel compelled to keep up with?

For 600 bucks.. You gotta ditch RAM, CPU, MoBo, PSU and video card.

Mobo: Abit AB9=$148
CPU: E6300=$183
RAM: G.Skill DDR2-800 2GB RAM=$149
Video Card: X850XT=$146
PSU: Forton AX-450 (450watts)=$52

Total=$678

FX, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing when the Conroes came out. I will not waste my time going anything other than Dual Core. My Socket 754 Athlon 64 3700+ is running at 2.4 Ghz, and has 1MB L2 Cache. The embedded MMC only will support DDR 400, though. That is a downfall of having a Socket 754 is the memory controller on the CPU is NOT going to support Dual Channel DDR Memory or DDR 2 Memory.

I've seen some benchmarks with this CPU running on par with a Socket 939 4000+ barely lagging behind due to the same clock speed/ and L2 cache levels.

I think I'm going to wait for Conroe, and go Dual Core Conroe of AM2 X2 when they drop in price. I am tempted to wait it out till the DX 10 cards come out, and do a complete platform change.

My FX5900 really plays everything I do fine. I'm just having an upgrade itch that I have to scratch. I need a new toy :) haha.

Lemon Law, I hear ya, I really don't need to upgrade but at I think I will anyway more than likely when Dual Core drops down a little cheaper once Conroe comes out. I'm not really compelled to keep up with anyone, I just like upgrading, and getting new Technology. Playing computers games, and having a nice TV to watch movies on is all I need to content with things.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
