First Time Overclocking, Got a Question

ok, I have an athlon 64 3200+ winchester that I would like to overclock to 2.2GHZ from the 2.0 GHz its currently at.

I just want to get to 2.2 and no more because I just ordered a 7800gt and it looks as though it runs well with a CPU at or above 2.2 GHz.

So I was just wondering what I would have to do to get this done. Do I really have to mess with everything?

Or could I just go into my BIOS and under the part that says "CPU Frequency" change it from 200 to 220.

Is it necessary to mess with anything else?
 
Man, if only we had a forum for, I don't know, CPU/Processors and Overclocking or something...

Upping the frequency like that (without touching anything else) will OC the RAM as well. If you don't want to do that, you will have to up the frequency, then use a divider to run the RAM at 200Mhz. There's plenty of information in the CPU/OCing forum.
 
yes i know. I ask because at Stock Settings in my BIOS I have:

CPU frequency: 200
Current DDR Speed:333
CPU/DDR Clock Ratio: 2/1.6
DDR Speed:333

Now if I up the CPU frequency to 220, I get a DDR speed of 364. Which is obvious as it is overclocking the memory as well.

But then I can change the CPU/DDR clock Ratio to 2/1.5 and will get a DDR Speed of 330, which is close to stock settings.

Would this be the correct way?

Yes, assuming you want to run your RAM at DDR333... stock is DDR400 on A64s. If you are using DDR333 RAM for some reason, that is the setting to use. That will OC the CPU but not the RAM.
 
Read the FAQ at the CPU forum, it will answer all your questions.

And no, its no supposed to be running at 333. Problem with ur mobo settings or your ram.
 
well doesnt that kinda of make sense if the RAM is rated at 400Mhz (according to the guide). So 333 is just somewhat underclocked???
 
It's a bit more complicated than that, you need to understand a lot more that can only be accomplished with some reading.
 
yea, but if its rated at 400 wouldnt that mean it operating frequency is 200MHz (since it is sending instructions twice per clock cycle.) and if mine is at 333Mhz explains why it was at 167.5 in CPU-Z (half of 333).


Now I did move the CPU frequency up to 220 in the BIOS and changed the FSB:RAM ratio giving me a DDR speed of 367 in the BIOS and 183.5 in CPU-Z. Wouldnt this seem right as the 183.5 is a bit closer to the limit of 200MHz.


So is this correct or am I completely off. I did read the guide a few times thru
 
after searching having 4 sticks of ram def explains why its at 333.

Ill be going Dual Core sometime over the summer so im sure I can hold out
