This may sound like a noob thread, cause it is !!

right so i finally got arounf to going online for gaming, player gears of war and call of duty 4 online ( yes i got that Live account)

so either im not doing something right or im entering some super skilled games cause i get killed in like a milisecond....i mean in gears you spawn you run through the map then hide and i see these guys i keep shooting them with no effect while they just cut me down - what gives ?

and in COD4 well that was a more fun - i think the game had like 40 players it was crazy pure frag fest - too many people i thing and also i got killed so fast it made me cry almost heheh

so whats going on, do i just suck or what ?

Practice.

PS - sounds like maybe you're on a console, may want to try the console gaming forum.

You've basicly never played games in your life when you step into multiplayer. Doesn't matter how long you've played single player games. Being good against computers and being good against people require different skill sets.

If you're on PC, and playing random matches it's a given your opponents are using aimbot hacks that kills you by head shot.

Thanks Baked, as if there isn't enough people who cry hax everytime someone beats them.

Truth is I've played a lot of FPS games, and have put in several hundred hours on COD4 already - I've seen two people I know were hacking, and 2 others I suspect were, and so far I've seen PB ban 3 people for having known hacks. Hacking is not as common as some pessimists would like to claim.

Andrei: like the others above said, there's a big difference between single player and multi-player. It's important to keep yourself cool during the period when you're first learning to play, too many people get upset and either stop playing, or start making unfounded accusations of cheating.

The lag effect in a game is a big difference between the instant response of single player, so often times you'll fully believe you are hitting the opponent, but because of the delay of information your aim is actually slightly off. That delay takes time to learn and adapt to. And with a 40 person game - I assure you, the lag was bad. I haven't found a single server in COD4 that actually handles more than 24 players without lagging. Find games with fewer people, and try to ask people who seem to be doing really well about how they play - most good players will be quite willing to give tips and help for new people.

If you use xfire, you can feel free to add me (losermandfb) and when you see me playing go ahead and join the server I'm on. Let me know who you are and I'll give you some advice.

well i am always under the nick andrei3333
i would love to add you but have no idea how to

i am not saying any one is cheating, but all i am saying is that i seem to take no damage at all i just get sawed down

i tried playing a game with 6 players, 3 on 3 and it was the same, my connection is fast, i ping arounf 100 all the time and i dont know what delay you meant, but i can kill guys its just that is SEEMS for me to kill someone it takes like 10 shots but for thme it seems like it takes 1 or 2 shots to kill me

its weird, i like it, but i dont enjoy getting killed so fast like this,,, it a lot harder than playing against computer

For COD4 i recommend domination matches over FFA, or at least team death matches. Much less likely to round a corner and get a bullet to the face within 5 seconds of spawning.

The problem with online games when you're new to them is that the people you play against know the maps perfectly. I haven't played the CoD games since the first one but if the rest are anything like the first, how well you do has a lot to do with knowing all of the angles. Deathmatch games aren't like that as much which is why quake/unreal is more fun for noobs.

Ah, the stuff about the cheating was a reply to Baked. People who go claim everyone is hacking really annoy me, it leads to people giving a hard time to legitimately good players.

Xfire is a chat program, similar to AIM or MSN, but it focuses on providing features for online gamers - so you can see what games your friends are playing, send them messages that popup in-game, and join the server they're playing on directly. You can get it from xfire.com if you're so inclined.

As for the difference in time to kill: COD4 has a ranking system that unlocks new weapons and perks as you play. Different weapons have different amounts of killing ability, some are one shot, and some require a lot of fire. There's also a perk that boosts damage called Stopping Power (which should be the default on the beginning classes.) You can read the list of ranks and unlocks here.

Anyhow, have fun!

Most games have this thing called 'headshots'. Like in Counterstrike, a single shot to the head ( if you didn't have a helmet ) would be an instant kill. If you aim for the upper body parts you will need less bullets to kill someone. This also takes more skill though. And, you do know that just can't just keep firing your gun, right ? You need to fire in controlled bursts, or you're spread is going to be insane and you won't hit much except for the surroundings.

In the end, MP is way different then SP, and it takes some time getting used to. If you have Live Gold btw, and like HALO 2, you could try and play that. Someone mentioned to me that Halo 2 has very good 'matchmaking', so you play against people of the same skill. I don't have Halo 2 currently installed though, so no idea how many people are still playing ...

Practice, practice, practice.

I've played multi-players games from the beginning of Quake and I still get owned at times!

Last night I was playing TF2, had a blast, but there were a couple of snipers that cut me down every time I moved. They weren't cheating, they were just damn good. I was able to take them down every once and a while, but I basically got owned :p

I just hit Level 55 in COD4 MP yesterday, and I think I'm just now starting to get decent at it (been on the MP for a few weeks). I was fairly decent at Wolf ET, but the games are quite different.
I started out with Free-For-Alls while I was trying to get the mechanics down (go for smaller matches where you'll have a better chance of living for longer than a minute) then I moved on to Team Deathmatch once I didn't think I'd be an utter embarrassment.

BS.

Yes there are cheaters out there but they are not the majority of players. I do not cheat, never have and never will but I have become a crack shot in FPS games since I have been playing them for almost two decades now.

Not everyone who playes these games started yesterday. It's all about practice and experience.

I had the same issue when i first started playing MP.
The game was Kingpin and players were camping at the spawn points. As soon as I spawned, boom. I was dead. It was very frustrating. I finally started going into games with only a few players (less chance of spawn kill) until I got better and could hold my own.

Yeah, it sucks when you see the kill cam and you're torn between whether the person is really THAT good or if they were cheating.
I also tend to be suspicious of that one guy who has more than double the next highest amount of kills with a low number of deaths.

Dude, you are new and you are playing people who have been playing online for many years now. If you didn't get your ass handed to you I'd be asking what the hell is wrong with everyone else. You're in a whole nother world now, enjoy it and have fun, but realize you are the low man on the totem poll.
