First time manual overclocking. Need feedback. 4790k

Here are screen caps of my results. I didn't run prime95. I just ran the 3d mark test, because I wanted to be around to monitor the temp. These are my temp results on air cooling with the max temp being 78C on a single core. I set the clock to 4.6 and 1.216 vcore. The average temp stayed around 55C. I am guessing that this is the best I'm going to get out of air. Should I run this on prime95 before buying a water cooler and trying to clock higher?

I'm not sure if 3d mark is a real stress test? This is my first time overclocking, so I'm not fully sure what to use. I didn't want to run prime95 and leave my computer and it burn out. I was hoping 3d mark would be a good....initial test?

Try the stress test in Intel's tuning utility?

It also has graphics and memory tests, and a benchmark.

It gives a lot of info and control as well.

Ouch, you need to put that chip back to stock clocks, until you get a decent heatsink. If you tried running an actual stress test, you'd start a fire. 4790Ks run upwards of 90C core temps at stock clocks, when running stress tests, if using the stock heatsink.

That's because it's grossly inadequate for this quad core, I know most here recommend the 212's but they're kinda low end for a high end rig. The minimum I'd go for is a cooler master hyper 412 especially in warm places.

3DMark will not give you the max temps for your CPU (OCCT will), but I like it because it still shows some of the highest temps I will see with the games/apps I use.

What do you need the extra speed for? For most systems, a 4790k at stock speed would not be the bottleneck.

I'd just see if it can Prime where you have it first, depending on what type of WC you were going to do.

For running what you are it must have pretty decent air to begin with, but I guess you haven't stressed ti too hard.

NM, Saw ya have an EVO in there now, my bad.

Unless you get a dedicated loop WC system set up you probably won't see a major increase.

There are a few other coolers for air might kick it up more, but unless you're going to spend a lot on a water system not sure worth it IMHO.

Still use an old NH-D14 on the main here, unless you plan on spending hundreds in a WC system not sure I'd bother.

A newer NH-D15 would run as well as most AIO water systems these days, if you have the room.

Without worrying if things might fail long run.

I always use large cases these days just because i guess, it is space dependent.

It's an old X58 with a X5680, but it still clicks along pretty well at 4.6 Ghz.

If you're going to mess with building a serious WC system as a enthusiast learning thing and spend hundreds of bucks, go for it.

If you're thinking throwing a AIO in there is going to make a major difference, you may be disappointed.

From what I have read, get the best water cooler you can find if you want something that won't throttle in stress tests. Mine doesn't get too high without throttling under OCCT. But 3dmark does allow more room here. This was just seeing what it would do. Stock is fine for everday use (audio and video encoding, multiple vm's at once, gaming) for my needs.

Overclocking my 4790K was fun, but ultimately just leaving it at max turbo on all cores gives almost all the performance with none of the headaches. I did manage to hit 5GHz on a cold night with my H110 cooler, but that is far from a 24/7 setting.

I'm not overclocking for performance purposes. I can run autocad, illustrator, lightroom, Photoshop, office, chrome, and league of legends at the same time while on stock clock. I'm just doing it for fun. I have two of these setups, amd 8320 and 8370. I've never over clocked once. The most recent 4790k build I did a few days ago was really just to play with overclocking.

With my i5, I downgraded from a bare-die mounted custom watercooling loop to a 212 EVO and found that while temps were a few degrees C higher, my max overclock and noise levels were about the same. I disagree with those recommending a higher-end cooler unless you're going to be running very high voltage (1.3+).

Make sure you're not using fixed-vcore for a daily-use overclock.

My 4790K does not throttle, or even come close to it, with all 4 cores running at 4.4ghz during Intel Burn Test.

I am using a 212evo.

I consider that plenty of cooling.

All four, HT enabled. I had to keep a cheat sheet of all the settings I had to use in the BIOS, it was VERY picky above 4.7GHz. Got lucky on a cold night, I had the rig out in the garage at the time and ambient temps were in the high 30s F.

Nice! I can't wait for winter to hit here in Australia so I can do some extreme overclocking on my 4790K.
