Hello!

A-grade noob here, I am about to purchase AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ AM2 3.0GHz to install onto my ASUS M2NPV-MX Motherboard.

I've never done anything like this before, only slotted in PCI cards and such.

I'm not a complete moron, I know how to handle the components with care and everything, but I'm pretty nervous in case something goes wrong so I would appreciate any tips.
Assuming I fit it all in correctly what are the chances of anything else going wrong? Incompatibility etc..
What is the worst that can happen, Blue screens? Or could something explode?!

Cheers for the help

Haha, you just check the CPU, 1 of the corners will be different from the other corners, not sure how to explain in English. It will look triangle like? The CPU slot will look the same, so you know how to align the CPU, so all the pins will fit perfectly. Usually you don't need a lot of force to drop it, I just put it in there and push really gently, it should immediatly pop in, then you push a little in all the corners and in the middle and it should be fine. Then you continue installing the heatsink, which with the pushpins is also fairly easy to do, just follow the steps given in the Motherboard manual.

I'm just assuming the Asus motherboard is a AM2 motherboard and stuff. When all this is done, you should be good to go, and Windows should have no problem detecting it. If you are coming from a single core CPU, you might have to install some dual core optimizers though, but that's pure software and even easier.

You're buying a retail cpu. Instructions will be inside as well as your motherboards manual.

First timer eh? The main tip I can give you is.... don't put it in the wrong holes, you dont want to bend the pins.

Fixed.

Ok sounds pretty straightforward.

I am coming from a single core so what are these dual core optimizers and where can I get them from?

cheers

the first time I installed a socket 478 CPU, I was about 99% sure that I was going to break the motherboard... those clips took a ton of force :)

LoL! reminds me of when I installed my X2 3800+ (AM2). Talk about sweating while trying to get the latch in place!
