When I bought my Impala last year all it took was a 5 minute phone call to my insurance agent and the VIN number of the car. She gave me a quote, I approved it and then she faxed over the proof of insurance to the dealer. Once that was taken care of I finished signing some papers and away I went. Michigan / State Farm

Price some insurance from several different agents so that all you have to do is call them once you buy a car.

DO NOT leave the lot until you have insurance on the car,

In most cases the dealership will not let you leave without insurance.

And you'll probably need the VIN to get insurance... I've never been in the same situation as the OP, but I imagine you'd buy the car, then get insurance, then pick the car up.

Why would you need the VIN for insurance?

I needed it when we added my wife's car to the insurance.

Otherwise, how do they know the 2003 Black Civic Coupe EX I crash is the same one they're insuring? ;)
