Going to be buying a new car in the next week or so. I've got most of the details down as far as negotiating, financing, etc. But I have a few questions regarding tax, title, and registration. The car will be purchased in Massachusetts.

Tax - Do I need to pay this at the dealership or at the RMV?
Title - The dealership should give this to me when I buy my car correct?
Registration - Does the dealership apply this for me or do I need to go to the RMV? If I need to go to my RMV, do I just need to bring my title?

Are there any other documents I need to be aware of?

Thanks.

Tax at dealership. Whether you get title or not depends on state. A dealership of decent size will have the ability to do all the DMV stuff onsite so you'll need not go anywhere. Otherwise, you'll have to go to DMV with whatever docs the dealer gives you. Don't worry about it. This isn't an area they will bother screwing you in as it just costs everyone time. They will screw you on car price or similar, not the other bits.

Tax is usually collected by the dealership.
Title is sent to you by the state. If you finance it, you get a clear title. Otherwise, it will indicate that there is a lien.
Registration wil be temp until you get proper tags from state.
Dealer will give you paperwork that goes to state.
You will need to produce proof of insurance to get vehicle off the lot.

Now the dealership is going to try to add in extra services/charges.
Charges for paper handling at Registry.
Internal document handling.
Internal additional profit.

The above items have started showing up as a way for dealers to pad bottom line.
All can be negotiated/removed if you put your foot down.

Any guess on how much would these fees total to?
