Newegg Wishlist:

VVVVVV Look down there for the wishlist VVVVVV

Hey,

I'm a first time builder, and I'm starting with something relatively big. I'm pretty sure I know enough to be able to do a decent building job. I haven't ordered my parts yet, though. If anyone here could be kind enough to look over the wishlist above and see if I should make any corrections, I would be thankful. I'm not a total newbie, I know what's in there, what connects to what, etc.

Any tips would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

you may want to wait as new video cards are coming out and the x2 cpus will be affordable in probably 6 mos, meaning i wouldn't go with that chip since you will be able to get a dual core shortly for that $$$. is there any way you could hold off a bit?

also, some video cards will come with the hl2 game, so you may be able to save some $$ on that.

i would go a nf4 ultra board and not via

When it means it's warrantied by the manufacturer only, that means that you must return; your motherboard to Asus if it isn't working and your CPU to AMD, not Newegg.

The software things are if it doesn't work when you get it, you return it to Newegg and they send you a replacement copy of the exact same software.

Okay, switched out the via for an nf4ultra.

About the dual cores and the new cards, holding out now would mean I would have to wait until next summer, since purchasing wouldn't be an option during the period inbetween for me. I really need something new too, since I'm stuck with a terrible P4 1.6GHz, GF2 MX/MX400, 256MB RAM system right now. I'm planning to get another card in about 2 years or so, and then have a major mobo and CPU update after that.

I'm looking into the free HL2 right now. I remember something about ATI cards coming with a free HL2 voucher, but I can't find anything about that now on Newegg.

EDIT: Oh, and the "What's this?" things. I copied that straight off the wishlist, and it has those little "What's this" popups that explain the thing. I didn't write those, =P.

I just bought that same motherboard and love it - stable as a rock! The Asus A8V Deluxe is a great choice.

I'd suggest getting a 3700+ San Diego...that chip is a monster and overclocks on stock air cooling to around 2.8Ghz

On the memory side, I like what you're thinking, but may I suggest the path that I took? I bought a 2GB twin pack from OCZ that has better timings than that Corsair you picked out. It's not a major difference, but they're both about the same price now...just a thought.

I'll write more later, but so far I like what I see...

Do you know the launch price for the new GeForce?

I'm trying to keep this under $1900, but the new GPU is teasing me. Any way I could cut a few corners here and there?

Okay, I've decided to downgrade to 3700+ SD, and get a PCI-E mobo. Just a question... do I need an SLI mobo?

I'm also looking into the OCZ memory, thanks for the suggestions.

UPDATE:

Was messing around a bit. Here's a updated cart. No vid. card yet, I think I might just pop a new GeForce in there.

Unless he plans to add the machine to a domain or use IIS or the windows backup utility or dual CPU there is NO REASON TO GET XP PRO

replace the sony dvd burner with the NEC 3520a BK DL DVD Burner ($45.99) & drop the Lite-On... should save about $20...

consider the samsung spinpoint P series SP1614C 160GB SATA HD (very quiet) $90 or the spinpoint P Series 160GB SATA-II HD160JJ (very very quiet & much faster) $120...

pricing from neweggO...

I'm thinking of switching out with that.

If possible, I would like it if someone pointed out a good case cheaper than my current one.

Personally, i think that case is hideous.

I have a Thermaltake Soprano...not cheap, but they are gorgeous well laid out cases.

The Soprano would do fine with my system, I think. Just a question though, is the 430W PSU in it enough for what I want?

I would get personally a Lian Li PC-61. I have it in my machine and I set up my computer in around a hour compared to my previous case which took me 2-3 hours. It has a removable mobo tray and enough drive storage for 4 or more hard drives. Then I would get either a OCZ Modstream PSU or a Antec or Enermax 450w or more.

Seems like a solid case. A bit dull on the outside, but looks roomy and everything. I'll consider it.

I just noticed I have a HS and Fan on my wishlist, and I'm buying a retail CPU. So, I took the HS and F off the wishlist, and that cut off about 39 bucks.

Alrighty, sorry, but back again with a batch of questions.

1. Is THIS PSU good enough? Relative to my other parts, would it hold up? Keep in mind that I'm planning to put a GeForce 7800 (Possibly GT) on this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817148005

2. Here are some cases I'm considering. Could you give me some opinions? I really don't want the case and PSU to go over $120. And I want a 500W PSU.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144103

3. Would you even recommend that I install a PSU myself? Is it hard?

(Oh, and the Lian Li(s) are way too expensive for what I'm looking for.)

$2000 and all you can afford is a 6800 GT? Your gaming system is off-balence.
