Ok, so my p3 500 has taken me as far as it possibly can. It was a good box, but now I am getting into Video Editing and am looking to build a new box. I have read all the debates between AMD and Intel, and decided still to go with the Intel solution. Here is what I am thinking about getting. Please chime in if there is a better/cheaper deal out there. Keep in mind though that I am sticking with Intel 🙂

UPDATED LIST THANKS TO THE SUGGESTIONS! Keep them coming, please. Any better ideas on a video card ? I won't be doing alot of gaming, very minimal in fact, mostly video editing...

If it's a video editing box, I would suggest a bigger harddrive. At least 80GB.

Also, are you planning on overclocking? If so, I woul suggest the p4 1.6a instead of the 1.8a. Your'r almost garanteed 2.1ghz with the 1.6a and a little overlocking and the bus will be within spec.

finally, save yourself some money and get the audigy OEM instead. The only difference between the OEM and retail is the software and the software is garbage (in my opinion)

DreDay,

I forgot to mention that I already have a IBM 80gig drive for video storage.

I have not really thought about oc'ing all that much. Will the 1.8a not oc well at all?

Good idea on the audigy oem. thanks. saves me $24!

You've got enough hard drive space then.

The 1.8a will overclock, but the problem is that you may not reach 2.4ghz which means you would have to run your agp/pci bus out of specifications. With the 1.6a, 95% of the time you can just raise the front side bus to 133mhz and maybe raise the voltage to 1.55 and you will be running at 2.13ghz and everything will be within specifications. I'm not a big fan of running my PCI/AGP slots out of spec, since it can lead to data loss.

Finally, I would go with a Asus P4B266-C motherboard for $108.00 from Newegg.com. I prefer intel chipsets, I don't really trust SiS chipsets. Call me paranoid, but I rather go with the industry standard chipset. Also, if you don't mind waiting 2-3 weeks, you can buy the geforce4 4200 for $179.00 which will blow away the geforce3 ti200 you are getting. The geforce4 4200 will even blow away a geforce3 ti500.

1.8 will OC well, the 1.6 is just a better value. With 1.6, you should reach 2.2GHz, and maybe even 2.4GHz if you are lucky!

I wouldn't get the Maxtor HD or the Asus motherboard because:

-Asus is a really expensive brand and they're really not that good. Chances are you can find something better and cheaper (eg Soltek).
-Maxtor HDs seem to have pretty high failure rates and I'd never put one into any box I build. I stick to Seagate drives.

I think some people might disagree on that one. The Asus board is only 108 dollars and locks the PCI/AGP bus no matter what FSB you have. So since he may not be able to get 18x133 ,he can settle for 18x120 or so and still have his PCI/AGP busses locked. The soltek seems like a good board, but everyone in the cpu's and overclocking forums has had success with the Asus P4B266, as have I, I'm running my memory at over 175FSB. I'd definatly recommend this board.

If you are looking for a P4 SiS645 board, get the Gigabyte 8SRX. Great overclocking options, very cheap at only $73 at mwave. I have it, and I am running my P4 1.6A at 2.3GHz.

Good luck!
