Just received the Sapphire 5870. Proceeded quickly to an east coast BBC2 server to play the game. This hurts, but, I did not notice much of a difference at all from my previous EVGA nVidia GTX280. Using the 10.3b ATI drivers I think. Ran the game at 1920x1200/medium. The server was full at the time...32 players...a mitigating factor, yes?/no?

This morning I DL'd the latest patch for the game. I'll check the performance and visuals in a while when my wife leaves...don't want her thinking all I do is play computer games...ha...

You may want to check your setup again, 5870 is faster than a GTX 480 in BFBC2.

That's the way it was previously...same as the 280.

So you bought a Ferrari and you drove it on city streets at 40mph and then you concluded that it doesn't feel faster than your Infiniti G37 coupe?

Crank 4AA/16AF in the control panel, increase all image quality to maximum settings. Check your performance. Now apply all of the same image quality settings to your GTX280. Compare and then revise your conclusions :)

Do you have V-Sync turn on limiting you to 60 FPS? If so, that could be why you don't see a difference in terms of Frames Per Sec, but you should be able to crank everything to MAX settings and still be able to run at high FPS whereas the GTX 280 would probably be much lower FPS. The 5870 is a good card.

Isn't this one of those games that likes quads?

Anyways crank up the details and try again :)

Lol, very nice car analogy.

Echoing everyone else, crank those details man. Everything high, and turn on HBAO/AA.

Guess I wasn't very clear in my OP. I was referring to speed/movement, and not the visuals. And, am I using the right ATI drivers?

Yikes... your quasi-attempt at sarcastic humor?

I think he means that we don't really understand what you mean by "speed/movement". If your GTX 280 was handling the game at decent fps at med settings, your 5870 isn't going to improve the smoothness of the game at med settings. Smoothness is all about sustained fps, which the 5870 will have at higher settings than the GTX 280.

Crank it up...

This game loves a fast quad, but it's not entirely CPU-limited. You should still be able to crank out max including AA with decent frames. Only thing that might be an issue is a pit of 31 other players throwing grenades at each other...

Oh, and, please clarify what you mean by speed/movement.

At medium settings you're probably gonna get the same (stupid high) FPS on a 5870 as a GTX 280 due to hitting CPU limit. You should be able to increase the graphics settings to max on the 5870 without losing any FPS though. Or you can keep them at medium and buy an i7 to get that up to 120 FPS or whatever.

Is there a command to show FPS in game? Or do I have to use Fraps?

Edit: nevermind, I downloaded and using Fraps I average between 35 (crazy firefights) and 70ish fps in-game at 1920x1200 with max settings on my E8500 @ 4 ghz and 5870.

Maybe CPU limited to an extent, I draw very high load across 4 cores when playing this game.

Dude, I'm on a 5850 with same res. and I leave everything but bloom and AA maxed. If you're getting slow-downs during explosions and what not, I'd guess that's your cpu. Any quad really helps BC2.
