You communistfornians need to get off your asses and vote these morons out of your state. or there won't be nothing left. One guy already tried to outlaw pneumatic roofing nail guns, saying they were dangerous. You have the most strict gun laws of all the states, and it is getting worse every day.
 
Potato guns are lethal!!! Kids use to fire those things at my high school from half a mile a way. They used to bust windows all the time.
 
Ah, potato guns. That brings back memories. After my friend told me about them in high school, I looked up how to make one on the internet. Then we went to Lowe's and bought the supplies and went to the supermarket and bought potatoes. We built it that day in my garage, then went down to the woods to fire it off. First shot was awesome! Second shot blew off half of the chamber and hit my friend in the leg. We drove over to his house to repair it and managed another two shots but they were wimpy. The potato gun then went up on a shelf in my garage where it has been sitting for 4 years. All in a day's work.
 
So because they are lethal, you want to outlaw them?

What about cars? Knives? Rocks? If someone is dumb enough to blow themselves up with a shabby spud gun, they deserve to go down Ala Darwin. If they cause destruction with it, then they deserve to get punished. And a gun with a bore over half an inch (Exceptions are black powder firearms, and they have limits also) that shoots a projectile that is anti-personnel is a destructive device, and regulated by ATF.

Tennis balls moving at Mach 3 hurt like hell, but usually don't kill.

I have one in my closet. Made out of PVC pipe. Use hair spray to ignite it and THOOMP! Heheh,, goes pretty far too!!!

There must be a serious misconception of the power of these homemade, inexpensive guns.
A kid in the next town over, Trenton, got hit in the face and it shattered his jaw.
Countless car windows have been blown out with these things, and people get a little looner with a 5 foot boomstick in their hands.

 
Monel your counter agruements are way out of context.
Obviously they are trying to stop something like potatoe guns because they are mdoerately new, and any kid with a screw for brains can make one, and hurt someone.

I know the power of them. Mine will go through 6 sheets of cardboard and can bust 1/2" plywood...
 
Phuz, I've made tennis ball cannons since pop cans were made of steel.

Anything is dangerous is used with stupidity. I used to have a cannon ball mortar that would lob a 16 pound Brunswick 1500+ yards with a pound of black powder. They are cool, because they make a whistle sound when they fly through the air. Wanna talk dangerous? 😀

And now it appears that everything we own should be required to have a practical use or we should not be allowed to own it. WTF is with that?
 
If trebuchets are still legal you're fine. Takes more time to get a trebuchet working, but man are they impressive when they work. In HS physics class we were put into groups to build egg launchers, my group built a trebuchet with a 900 lb (not a typo) counterweight. Unfortunately we could never get the sling right and had to use it like a catapault instead. Still, we were the only group whose egg launcher was capable of launching a group member too. 🙂
