This makes sense, and hopefully it'll save us some money. I mean, you have laser-guided weapons, why not just take the guided part out and let the laser do all the work?

The main problem I see with directed energy weapons actually comes from Star Trek: How many times have you seen the damned phasers just not work? Something drains the power cells, or the Borg adapt, or the target has multiphasic shielding or whatever. It's much harder to prevent an AK47 from working, because that's just straight up kinetic energy.
