Really, OP, consider a Vertex 4. They're great.

I know two drives is not a trend, but makes you wonder. Especially since OCZ has used crap NAND before in Petrol drives. (The octane and vertex 4 both had high relocations and died before exhausting rated NAND cycles)

When something like the M4 is available cheaply why risk with the Vertex 4
There are lots of drives which are a much better pick like the Corsair Performance Pro, Plextor M3, Crucial M4, Samsung 830 and some Sandforce drives (Intel mostly).

OP for general desktop use you won't notice a difference between any of them so just get the cheapest.

Another 1/2 vote for the V4. I bought the Vertex 4 about a month ago (altho I really wanted the 830) since it was on a great sale. The 1.4 firmware upgrade was royal pain to do. I can understand it being destructive but upgrade only as a slave drive is quite crazy on OCZ's part. The drive is fast tho so if price and speed is what you care about I'd get it. I've not had any issues with it.

I am guessing it would be pricey-er, probably more so than worth it in his location.

Samsung 830 would be my first choice as well. Crucial or Intel next.

Lots of reasons which work out to Intel needing to go back to in-house controllers or lower their prices....
