First speeding ticket...

This sucks, got nailed going 60 in a 40... How much do you think this will put me back? I am NOT going to court, end of story, so don't try to get me to go... I am going to send the court my plead of guilty and see how much i gotta bite for...
 
They don't tell you up front? At least in Ohio you know what it will set you back.

How old are you? The cost of the ticket might be marginal compared to the amount it'll raise your insurance. In Ohio, 20mph over is Reckless Op IIRC, which isn't good for insurance rates. They don't always pursue the reckless op charge though.

They will get you if you're a repeat offender and the cop remembers you. Example. My friend got busted for underage consumption. About a year later, he makes the idiotic move of seeing how fast he can do the manuverability cones behind the driving school in his truck. The cop saw him, stopped him, and upon recognizing him, gave him a reckless op ticket. I, of course, just laughed at him for doing something so dumb
 
The sheriff didnt tell me how much it would be... He said if i plead guilty by mail, they would send me a bill for the amount i was penalized...
 
Someone told me if you plead no contest you get the fine with no points.. for the first time or something.

I dunno, listen to other people. 🙂
 
Yeah, the speeding ticket itself is not that expensive, but if you're like me, young, male, drive a shiny car, then you're insurance is going to sky-friggin-rocket. That's why it's so worth it to go to court and pray that the cop doesn't show up. Even if the cops do show up, they're often pretty stupid and you can mess them up good.

Two summers ago I was the lucky recipient of two speeding tickets within a week. I went to court for both of them and because I go to school out-of-state, I was able to push back the trials for a full year. By the time my trial came around, the one cop that DID show up didn't remember a thing and I got off easily.

And if you do go to court and lose, the judge will often times cut down the price of the fine.
 
Here's mine in CA:

45 in a 30.
$87 ticket.
$30 tacked on in order to take traffic school.
$20-$30 for traffic school.

Total: $137-$147

You'll have to pay the fine. And you can opt for traffic school if you don't want that on your record. I can't remember but I remember it being that you can only take traffic school to erase a point every 18 months. A point will stay on record for 3 years (actually is permanent but withheld from inquiries).
 
I was caught 90 in a 70 last weekend. The cost of court fees was $61 where as the ticket was $145...

I of course am going to take defensive driving instead which will be about $30-$40, so total cost for me would be ~$100

that's a lot of $$$ but better than $145 and a ticket on my record.

Why don't you just go take defensive driving? Please no contest or nolo contendere (on some forms its worded that way)

Its your first ticket... don't worry. My first ticket was 79 in a 30, so you shouldn't have it that bad. I'll estimate ~115 for your ticket- ask the clerk at the office about taking defensive driving. That should keep it off your record and keep you insurance from going up.

BTW, my license is currently suspended and I've had an additional 5 speeding tickets... you don't have it bad, just don't stupidly keep speeding like I did.

Traffic school is the way to go if you can get it. It was such a wonderful experience, I have got to go twice! 😉
 
Insurance won't go up if you take the trafic school option! Just do it man! It'll get that point off the record. That point is withheld from inquiries until you either take the traffic school.

56 in a 40. Dad was disappointed but it wasn't that big of a deal. I drive a station wagon, so my insurance didn't go up.

so how would i do this traffic school thing? i was gonna send it my plea of guilty, and when i get the bill, should i deliver that by hand and ask the clerk about it? or do i have to do something before i send my plea...
 
I got busted doing 10 over in a school zone. The officer gave me a ticket for five over that cost me $150. (75 doubled because of the school zone) I was going to fight it in court for a few reasons, but figured I was getting off cheap when you consider all the times I broke the law and never got caught. Karma or something.
 
Take it like a menz! First admit you broke a law and then pay your fine. Then you'll be a better person than 95% of the morons on the road.

On a related note, if the damn jerk who was in front of me in the fast lane today is reading this.... get the #%$#$ outta my way next time!! I'll take responsibility for my own speed. Thanks. *&amp;%#-head.
 
I just got one the other day in AZ (65 in a 45). They give you 3 options:

1) Pay the fine ($210.00 in this case)
2) Contest in court (pay fine, and go to court)
3) Defensive Driving School ($107.00)
- complaint is dismissed
- no points assessed
- no further fine imposed

I'm going to take the class, half a day on the weekend. Now if my wife would stop calling me speedy gonzales...
