As for leniency, I think you ruined your "my first violation" currency by pleading guilty to 25 over (meaning you not only you admit going 80 but that you were fully aware you were going 80).

well, i didn't know i was going 80 until i saw the trooper and looked at my meter. and in my defense, my friend was having serious stomach aches and i wanted to get her to a rest room.

you didn't happen to notice all the cars you were speeding past? 😕

Go to court and see if you can get a deferral or traffic school. Research your options in YOUR STATE (NY?) first. Ask for advice here specific to YOUR STATE, and ignore the advice from idiots who don't live in YOUR STATE but will still want to tell you how to get out of a ticket in California.

Your goal is not so much to avoid the fine, but to avoid the insurance surcharges that will dwarf the fine.

When did he mention speeding past cars? 😕

Well most of you guys are wrong on the 80 in 55 being wreckless. 81 however in a 55 would be a whole new level.

Chance are that the OP was indeed going above 80, but the officer was nice and dropped it down.

Where I'm at, 26+ over is apprehendable.

what are points?

Get enough points deducted from your record and you lose your license.
The more important thing with less serious offenses is insurance points. Insurance points = higher insurance premiums, for three years in NC at least

Is there a website that lists the graduated interstate speeding ticket prices and the important speeds regarded as reckless and such, for all states?

http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/laws.html
covers reckless driving laws and absolute/prima facie speed limits.

Thanks! I had seen that site a long time ago but forgot to bookmark it.

Are interstate speeding tickets consistant throughout a state? Or do the penalties vary by county?

lol on some highways almost everyone is going 70-80 in a 55....

last april i got a ticket for 85 in a 50 and i tried to get away from the cop... he just gave me a ticket for the speeding though, no reckless driving or anything. he was pretty pissed, i'm surprised he didn't haul my ass to jail.

OP would it be possible for you to get a deferral so it won't go on your record? that's what i've done for my past 3 tickets, so while i've gotten a ticket for running a stop sign, one for +35 and another for +18, my record is clean 🙂

In downtown Indianapolis the speed limit is now an idiotic 50 MPH, and the average traffic speed is 70-75 MPH a good deal of the time I drive through there.

That is probably the funniest defense story I've ever heard...

Might have worked had she thrown up on the officer.
