Get a FireGL V3100 for entry server, V5100 for intermediate and V7100, if you're serious about building a server/workstation.

Unless you are just looking for a justification (for tax, spouse, or other reason) to buy a fancy PC, I recommend that you NOT try to combine a web server with a gaming/desktop PC.

If you are serious about hosting web sites, get a separate web server or host the sites at a commercial host.

If you AREN'T hosting serious sites, you can get usable web site hosting for $10/year/site.

If you ARE hosting serious sites, your web clients aren't going to appreciate the slow performance they'll see when you are killing aliens or the down time while you reboot the PC because the game crashed.

Well i have yet to have my systems crash while gameing. That said that is the reason for dualcore processor extra ram and such. This will be for my other half to dbl as a work related expense. She wants me off of her system that is really mine. So if she gets this i get mine back. She has yet to play bf2 or anything so she isn't in to anything 2 hard on a system yet.

goto the Forsale/trade fourms or a local fleamark computer shop and get a old P2 or P3 and use that for the web stuff

Than build whatever you like for your regular box

If you have need for reliability, you'll want a socket 940 system.

I think socket 939 will provide more than enough reliability. Or whatever socket he chooses. One socket, in and of itself, is not more reliable than another. The software is where most of the reliability issues come in. I have never, once, (granted in only 14 years) had a CPU prove to be "unreliable".

That being said, I agree, try and grab a cheap PIII or something and serve on that. Then build a nice gaming system. Dual core is great, but it's not the answer to everything. I don't know how much webserving you are going to be doing, but resources are still limted, even if you have two 2GHz cores. Not to mention bandwidth. Slow game times (if you play online) and/or slow page loading? Or both.

My point was just that server grade parts tend to be check more rigorously. For instance, SSI certified power supplies. Further, 940 uses ECC ram, which yield stability. As a note, I personally have had an unstable CPU and I know several people who have, and 940's are speed binned much more conservatively.

Well, that may be so. But since he also wants to game, I doubt that 940 is the route he should take. Granted, I still feel that a seperate server would be best, I think he's trying to do it "on the cheap" and is not likely to buy two high(er) end systems. One to game and one to serve. And i still stand by what I said, any other socket will be stable enough for the stated applications.
