First review of the VoodooTV

Nice review ChrisOh, But looks like i'd be better off with an All-in-Wonder Raidon eh?
(I plan on getting a new vid card soon)

I want Win2k support 🙁 My Hauppage WinTV doesnt seem to like my new computer (search for my thread about it).

Damn, I'm looking for a cheap home-quality capture card and this fits the bill PERFECTLY. Well, except for the lack of Win2K support. I need Win2K support!!!! It's selling for ~$130 CDN, so I think I'll slap down that cash...my brooktree piece of crap card doesn't work perfectly in Win2K.

Chris Oh
What's the max resolution that the card can capture?

The software lets you capture in 640x480 mpeg at 30fps with your choice of bitrate. Win2k drivers will be released in a few days at 3dfxgamers.com and the VoodooTV 200 comes with support for a hardware remote but only European users will get their shipped with a hardware remote. 3dfx says this is because European homes are more cramped than American homes and are more likely to use their computers as TV's... gotta love reasoning lol. The onscreen remote can be skinned and moved off the screen but I didn't think of a way to remove it completely, I'll have to fiddle with the menu more.

Is the VoodooTV 200 better than the Hauppauge Wintv? My normal TV has better image quality than my Wintv. I think the cable signal isn't strong enough or too much noise for the Wintv although it's strong enough for a normal tv. Is the VoodooTV 200 image quality comparable to a normal TV?

ChrisOh,

Tell 3dfx that by their reasoning, there is no need for the VoodooTV in North America then...after all, our houses aren't so cramped that we have to use our computer as a TV. Talk about stupid reasoning...they're giving people reason not to buy their product heheheh! I want a damn hardware remote😉

I think I'll go pick one of these puppies up!!

I have a 17"inch trinitron right now, and I plan on upgrading to 19" but hopefully a 21".. Im really into graphics. And I plan on moving out soon, going to school in another city. So I'd rather drop $130CND on one of these then buy a $400CND TV Set.

Now question.. I have a DVD decoder, can I hook both of these guys up? Or I guess I can take my decoder out for now, I hardly use it anyway.. Maybe I'll drop a PIII 600 in and do software DVD... 😀

Thanks!

DaZ,

I think the VoodooTV can coexist with the dvd decoder. No passthru cable is necessary as the VoodooTV probably just uses an overlay like other TV cards.

"I hope it can keep 3dfx running a little while longer so that they can get rampage out and stay alive."

I'm hoping that too..

maybe this will be a new side of 3dfx. features! heh.. after Rampage, I hope they can get Fear out ASAP.. it would be nice to have something with great 3D speed, Great DVD acceleration, some sort of TV tuner like this VoodooTV, maybe MPeg 2/Mpeg 4 encode and decode aacceleration..

hehe that last one would be sweeet. coupled with the TV in, you could make an MP4 of your favourite shows!

of course, the ATi Radeon already has most of this, all we need is more competition!

AND, I wish we could get some Raytracing acceleration! it's not that inconcievable!

<< No W2k driver for the doodoo tv
3dfx blows
>>

Remember 3dfx said they wouldn't be supporting Win2k out of the box for the V4/5 series? Didn't they have drivers available for download at the time of release for the cards?

They'll most likely have Win2k drivers at 3dfxgamers.com to download within a week of release.

I hate f*cking trolls.

and also, the thing about this card, is that performance in the drivers isn't the issue, it's compatability.

has anyone YET done a review of 3dfx latest Voodoo 4/5 drivers? (1.03 I think?). they've done lots of comparisons to the old ones in 9x...

<< it would be nice to have something with great 3D speed, Great DVD acceleration, some sort of TV tuner like this VoodooTV, maybe MPeg 2/Mpeg 4 encode and decode aacceleration.. >>

That would be an ATI All In Wonder Radeon. 😉

would it now..

"maybe MPeg 2/Mpeg 4 encode and decode aacceleration."

I didn't think so.

notice however I DID mention that it is THE best in terms of the most features like those? or did you even bother finishing reading my message?

<< 3dfx says this is because European homes are more cramped than American homes and are more likely to use their computers as TV's >>

What a stupid excuse. If their homes are cramped, then they will most likely be more closer to their computer, hence no need for a remote( you also dont sit across the room to watch a small dinky 15in monitor.

You must have spoken with Bubba, since that rationale could only come from someone with a single digit IQ
