Well no biggie for many of you, but it's a milestone for me. Getting the modem setup was the hardest part.

Mandrake 8.0 I picked up a long time back and just now got around to seriously trying to get it going.

Thanks for reading!

Good to hear you've given it a try. As usual, if there's something you can't figure out, consult the LDP, Google, the FAQs, the man pages, or ask here. :)

Congrats on your achievement.

Don't worry, I sure haven't forgotten the first time I got started using linux. It was debian on an el cheapo 486 that was so old it was rusting :D, thats the only computer I ever miss working with.

Congratulations!

I remember the first time I viewed a webpage and sent an email using Netscape 4.x/ RH 6.2..

That made me feel so...different :)

Me too, except I was using an earlier version of Redhat (maybe 6.1 or some late 5.x, IIRC). That was like...um... 3 or 4 years ago. :Q

Hey, thanks for all the support guys.

I installed it on a box I literally had in the closet. 200MMX, 64MB Ram. Boy is it slow. Don't know if the OS needs some tweaking or if it's truly the harware holding it back.

I should do a dual boot I guess on my "main" box. P4PE, 2.4, w 512MB and a Ti4200. I guess I was uncertain whether Linux would be compatable with that hardware. Yes, it's that new to me.

You can try using a javascript:ftplink(document.messagepostform.FTVAR_MESSAGETEXTFRM);document.messagepostform.FTVAR_MESSAGETEXTFRM.focus();
http://forums.anandtech.com/i/editoricons/link.gifdifferent window manager (IceWM/ XFCE; etc.) that Mandrake ships with. GNOME/ KDE are resource hogs.

Regarding your Hardware compatibility, for the main system, here are a few sites that you might find useful:

Mandrake's Hardware compatibility list (esp. since you r using Mandrake; and in case you missed it :))

Linux Hardware compatibility hot-to

and, of course, The AT thread on BSD/Un*x

you might want to try a newer version of Mandrake for your VC: else you will have a rather hard time configuring X. By the way, I would encourage the latter...great learnning experience; esp. if you have no specific plans for a weekend ..

Congrats!

It's all downhill from there. Just wait till you start messing with config files and stuff.

I have been through some many installs and rescue operations, it's worth it though. Everytime I get a little bit better.

Good luck

So you're thinking 9.0? I see 9.1 is in beta, I would think as a newbie, I should steer clear of that. Then again, if it's close to full release, I could just wait.

I set 8.0 up well over a year ago on an old Dell that should have been tossed. I know what you mean about configuring X. I about went insane getting it to work with the semi-proprietary STB Nitro video card in there. Didn't have any modems laying around that I could get working with it and stuffed the Dell back in the closet. Just sent it to it's grave 2 weeks ago.

I got a Lucent winmodem working with this install.

Good advice. I'll get the newer version. One of those anyway.

Edit: I just "breezed" through the AT thread you linked. You guys are literally speaking a different language from my perspective. I may need to pick up a few books on this. I learned Windows this way. But to be honest, I'll bet 80% of what's built into XP Pro is still beyond my comprehension.

Thanks for the links. :)

Well I must admit that most of the stuff in the AT thread is beyond my comprehension too:)
Mandrake 9.0 is excellent for beginers.
j/k..

I think getting a book is a good idea.

Good Luck!
