First post, first build in a while

OK, since this is my first post I'll try to make it as complete as possible....

I want to build a PC primarily for gaming. I'm currently playing BF2 (never got into 2142) and some COD4. I plan to set this up in the living room since I've been using our 1080p LCD. I need everything soup to nuts for the PC itself....nothing carrying over from an existing build. Don't need any peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse etc...) just the case and anything that would go inside it. Budget is $1000-$1200.

Since this will be in the living room there are special considerations. I plan to use an HTPC style case specifically the Silverstone LC17. Managing heat could be a potential issue in this style of case. It's a full ATX case....Looks like some of the larger video cards shouldn't be a problem as long as I'm happy with no more than 4 HD's. Considering the heat issues I probably don't want to stuff any more than that in there anyway.

Noise is also important since this will be in the living room. Looking to keep the PSU and other cooling as quiet as possible. Although I do understand that I may have to compromise on some fan noise on a gaming build.

I'm in OR so all parts will be bought in the US....I'm not partial to any particular vendor although I use Newegg a lot simply for convenience.

I have done some research already. Here's my current thinking:

CPU/MOBO.....I'll probably use an E8400 when available unless there's a compelling reason to go q6600 for this purpose. I don't see SLI as being realistic given the limited physical space in this case and of course cooling. Because of that I'm looking at going with IP35 although I haven't decided which one. Maybe this Asus P5K-E? Or an Abit IP35 Pro?

CPU cooling.....not sure there's a billion options out there. It just needs to be quiet ;).

Memory....not sure, so many flavors. 2GB minimum...more depending on OS and budget. I can always start with 2GB and add later although it would be nice to start with 2GB DIMM's in case space becomes an issue in that case. Seems like CPU cooling could interfere with one or more slots depending on the mobo and cpu heatsink/fan used.

HDD....I think budget might be the limiting factor here. Sure a couple 10k drives would be great, but most likely not necessary. Higher capacity of 7.2's would be nice for media purposes also.

Optical....actually I do have an optical drive I can use to get going so skip the optical drive.

Audio....I'll probably start out with on board audio unless it's just unacceptable, again to minimize how much I try to stuff into that case. 7.1 is not necessary but if it's included that's fine. My Marantz SR18 won't use it and it was a butt load of dough a few years ago and I'm not ready to replace it just yet. :) I want S-PDIF out , optical/toslink if I can get it.

Video....since I don't see dual cards happening in this case (SLI or Crossfire) I need as much card as I can fit in my budget. I've been looking at different flavors of 8800GT's but I'm not married to nVidia....just seems to be the card of choice right now. Maybe that's just me being lazy and buying into the marketing...IDK.

Overclocking is certainly not out of the question although it would be mild due again to heat.

OS....if it were purely for gaming I'd throw XP on it and call it good. But I'm wondering if Vista Ultimate would make more sense if I'm even thinking about using it for a media PC? I see there are a good number of people gaming just fine on Vista 32 and 64 bit. 64 bit might be nice looking forward, although it seems there isn't really a benefit to go 64 bit yet.

I guess that's it! Kind of a long first post but I wanted to make sure it was complete. If I missed anything I'm sure I'll hear about it. LOL

Thanks for a great resource in this site, and I look forward to your recommendations.

Ok now that that's out of the way I'll start with a possible component list and go from there...

Case - Silverstone LC17 $130
Mobo - Abit IP35 Pro $185
CPU - E6750 (place holder for now) $190
Memory - Crucial Ballistix 2GB $75
Video - EVGA 8800GT 512MB 256bit $290

That puts me around $870 and still need HDD, PSU, heatsink/fan....

Subtotal: $1,134.92

That's where I'm looking at right now. I just put the E6750 in there as a place holder for the planned E8400. Should be similar price I think, unless there's a markup initially on the E8400. BUT, I was thinking this morning and I may be able to scavange an E6400. Any reason an E6400 wouldn't work in this build? Moderately overclocked it looks like an E6400 would be fine performance wise.

Grab 4 GB RAM and 64bit Vista.

They say when DDR3 comes out mainstream, DDR2 will not be made any more and prices will climb just like they climbed on DDR1.

E6750 is a sound choice.

Don't buy 8800GT from Newegg, they have them overpriced because of insane demand.

Why 250G drives? I thought 500gb is the sweet spot price/gigabyte.

PSU is great...but you can get cheaper PSUs, like Corsair VX 450 for ~$65:

As for cooling, why not get a bunch of speed controlled fans?
When you need to game, just crank up the fans and blast away!

Thanks for the PSU info, these are exactly the kind of recommendations I need. Based on reviews it looks solid, and quiet which is important. Will 450W be sufficient since I don't plan to double up on video cards? Even at the 520W that I original picked, I was curious if someone might say it wasn't enough. I hear some crazy recommendations like 750W non SLI or 1000W+ if going SLI (which I'm not) etc....

I'm not tied to 250GB at all.....that was probably the most random choice. Just pulled them out of thin air based on good reviews etc.....

I'll research some speed controlled fans....that sounds like a good solution. Turn them down when idle to keep things quiet, then crank them up while gaming when quiet is out the window anyway. :)

Any thoughts on the possibility of scavanging an E6400?

450W is absolutely enough. Modern computers pull something like 200-300 watts out of the wall.

Here is a rather plain looking, but quality PSU from best maker in the business:
Seasonic 500W

For RAM, you can get any cheap RAM - in HOT DEALS forum there are couple threads for RAM as cheap as $6 per gigabyte after rebate!

Also take a look at Supertalent 2 gb for $35 ram, buy 2 for $70 and no rebates!

I don't know about E6400.

edit: here is the PSU calculator.

That looks like a great computer, but you don't have to spend that much. If you get a cheaper board you can still have all the same options. The DFI blood Iron for example is a great board and it is only like $110. I know MSI has a board in the $90 price range that will also overclock well and has great options. I just forget it's model number right now. I mean there is no real reason to get that expensive of a board for mild overclocking and everyday use.
For the Ram, there are tons of great deals right now. Just look around and you can get 2gb kits for about $35 shipped. (cheaper if you wait for a great deal, but it will be with MIR) The timings on them don't really matter that much, so just buy a pair that is decent. Like ddr2 800. The ones that MegaVovan suggested are great.

Now if you want to overclock I would recommend getting a e4500. They scale just as well as the e6xxx series and it is cheaper. it retails for about $125 at newegg. If you aren't planning to overclock keep with what you have or even get a faster one. People at the forum will love to help you if you have any trouble overclocking.

For the power supply send me a PM, and I can help you out. (but you need to enable your profile, so I can send one back.)

Great info! Thanks again. I want to get quality pieces but I also don't want to be throwing money away where I don't need to. So I appreciate the suggestions for alternatives.

d3lt4, I'll fix my profile and PM you. Didn't realize I had PM turned off. If I can get the E6400 it will be at no cost, which is quite attractive. Just wanted to make sure it would be sufficient. From what I've seen on this board the E6400 is plenty of processor with just mild oc'ing.

OK time for an updated grocery list:

1 SILVERSTONE SST-LC17-B Black Aluminum front panel, 0.8 mm SECC body ATX Media Center / HTPC Desktop Computer Case - Retail $129.99
2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s $139.98 ($69.99 each)
1 EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GT 600MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card $234.78
1 CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply - Retail $124.99
2 SuperTalent DDR2-800 2GB/128x8 S-RIGID Memory ($35.02 each)
1 DFI BLOOD IRON P35-T2RL LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard $107.99
POSSIBLY 1 Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor FREE

New Total $807.77 without OS

Still need to look at HDD and PSU might also change.... The possibility of scavanging a free CPU is a big chunk of the difference. But still with your advice it's down a little over $300. Very nice!!

Any reason not to go single 500GB HD? I picked the mobo that had both sata RAID and s/PDIF out in case I want to utilize the RAID.

You can pick cheaper mobo without RAID and go single 500G HDD. See 3 mobos I listed above.

Newegg has the DFI for $108 which looks like a pretty good deal compared to what I see on some other sites. I don't mind starting with a single 500GB HD, but I would like to have RAID available depending on how much I use it for a media PC.

Don't use RAID unless its for backup purposes.

Well....thanks for all the help. This is the list of everything that's on its way to me. I splurged on a 150GB Raptor....probably didn't need it, but sometimes I'm a little impulsive. :)

It looks like I will be able to get an E6400 from an existing build so I'll probably be looking for overclocking advice once I get cooling handled in this tight case. I'll add some updates once things arrive and I make some progress.

Thanks again!

Well, got everything installed and OS loaded last night. I'm not sure the Raptor was such a jet hot idea. It spins plenty quiet but read/writes sound like an enraged gerbal is trying to bash its way out of the case with a miniature hammer :(.

I'll try some things to dampen it a bit.....we shall see. Otherwise everything is good. Booted up the first time.....installed Vista with 2GB of memory and then installed the other 2 after. No problems there. Other than the Raptor the rig is whisper quiet. Overall pretty happy, just need to kill the gerbal or at least take his hammer away.

Try slipping rubber grommets or spacers between the hard drive and the cage inside your case to dampen the noise.

I'll give that a try Roguestar. I'm also going to try some things from my car audio days to deaden the case itself. Just have to make sure I preserve air flow.

After using some ensolite closed cell foam to deaden the inside of the drive cage and to decouple the drive from the cage and the cage from the rest of the case I can barely hear the Raptor anymore. Here's some geek porn:

http://home.comcast.net/~woods...lverstone/IMG_1128.JPG

You may notice that that is not the 8800GT I originally ordered. My bank froze the payment for NCIXUS because the payment was processed in Canada and it was flagged as suspicious card use outside the US. Anyway, by the time I approved the charge, the order failed etc..... That gave me time to reconsider and I bought this eVGA 8800GTS. Obviously no drives will go in that center cage with a card this big.....but I can get plenty of storage in the one cage.

Anyway..... I think it looks right at home under my Marantz. One of the things I liked about the LC17 case is you don't block any vents by stacking things on top of it. So far the E6400 I settled for is stable at 3.2GHz on stock voltage with just the Zalman 9500 for coolilng.

Thanks again for all the advice....I'm really enjoying this build.

Good call, you barely even hear of people using acoustic damping foam any more.
