Yes. For example, if the display driver depended on the directX installation that needed a reboot in prder to complete.

Practice makes perfect, but you will have to give M$ a call. They're pretty easy where it comes to those reinstalls, though - they just want tohear you say you don't have it installed on more than one machine.

If you have not changed any hardware, and even if you have changed some hardware, you can re-install and re-activate online without calling Microsoft. You only need to call if you change a lot of hardware, especially if you change your NIC and several other things. But you are re-installing on the same machine, so you should have no problem. And I agree that you should re-install from scratch and reboot after each driver install.

In addition to rebooting after each driver or application, I would also re-evaluate your sequence. Based on research and trial & error, mine has always been:

Chipset Software
DirectX
(Application Accelerator) - optional
NIC Driver
Windows Update
Display Driver
All the rest...

In any case, you do need to reboot between steps. Good luck.

Let me add that if you have no hardware firewall/router to defend from worm attacks through your broadband connection, it would be a good idea to take some preventive measures like I suggest here before you plug your network cable into your system. Once those lights come on by the network jack, it's showtime, whether you've fired up your browser yet or not. ;)

Great point!

That's something I take it for granted as I do all my work behind a router.
