First Official Renders of Equus Sedan

The genesis is pulling in 40% of trades that are currently Porsches, Lexus, BMW and Mercedes

not to mention that 9 out of every 10 Genesis sold are going to people outside of the Hyundai family... they are having an amazing time.

Not a fan of the wheels and the discontinuity in the "hip" lines but otherwise looks great.

Wonder why they aren't planning to sell outside of Korea.

I'm sure they will price this WELL bellow a S-Class or 7 Series.

There will be the difference.

I am sure there will be throngs of people who want to proudly announce to the world that they really wanted a Mercedes, but failed in life, so could only afford a Hyundai knockoff.

How about people who do not care about the badge but do care about the price/features/performance balance?

I pretty much was under your school of thought until I sat in a Genesis......

I was really impressed as no other interior but the new S-Class was better.

Because just as our friend senseamp has shown, Americans care more about the badge.

It will probably have a higher chance at doing well in Korea since it will be a domestic there.

Because no one outside of Korea will buy it. Korea taxes the crap out of imports. About 100% tariff to discourage import sales.

You're probably the same idiot who said that when Toyota first came out with Lexus. I mean who the hell would pay 60k for a Toyota?

Get a clue. Things change and Hyundai is making a name for themselves with quality cars for less. This is a good thing for the consumer.

Why do drawings of cars like this one always need to have 24 inch wheels with 1/4" of rubber?? I'm getting sick of all artistic drawings / tuner cars maximizing the wheel size in their designs. It's unrealistic & (at least to me) is about 1 step away from a giant wing on the back + fartcan exhaust.

Hyundai is making a name for itself as a discount brand, which puts it down a notch or two from the premium brands. Status counts for a lot in this market segment. Luxury cars are statements that you made it, Hyundai is not. Even Hyundai is not selling this outside of Korea, they must know something you don't, so the only idiot here is you.

Yep, they need a seperate brand name for these "luxury" vehicles they are coming out with.

Wonder why? Because that's only place where Hyundai can seriously rip-off the buyers. As Naustica said, tariff for import car in Korea is just ridiculous, and Hyundai knows how to take benefit from it.

In Korea, Genesis costs about $ 70,000, and this Equus successor is expected to have MSRP of well over $ 110,000, and they are still cheaper than import competitors due to outrageous tariff. (Don't forget about service & maintenance cost are also a lot cheaper as well) Why would Hyundai bring a car oversea aiming higher-end buyers, who wouldn't buy Hyundai anyway? And even worse, they have to sell a lot cheaper than they can sell in Korea, and profit is even lower due to marketing cost, freight, foreign tax, etc.

I don't have anything against this car on the merits, maybe it's even a good value, but it's not an S-Class competitor any more than a generic watch that sort of looks like a Rolex and works reasonably well is a Rolex competitor.

I don't understand why we don't slap Korean imports with tariffs like they do ours.

In Korea, US cars have been cheaper than Japanese/European competitors for pretty long time, but since buyers do not buy them, Hyundai only priced their models against Japanese/European competitors.

And especially, due to FTA few months ago, I am pretty sure US cars are not charged that much tariff as Japanese/European cars in Korea anymore. But the thing is, as I said, since Korean buyers do not buy US cars anyway, that didn't make any difference.

Except the Phaeton was simply a rebadged car.

If Hyundai really wants to become a luxury car company, they're going to have to dump the cheapo offerings. They should start shifting it all to Kia.

I disagree on the second point. I have been consistently impressed with Hyundai's latest offerings and would definitely plan a trip to my local Hyundai if I forsaw a car purchase in my future. Luxury is more than a price tag - I dont see any reason why they couldnt introduce a higher end model ontop of their current line up. I keep seeing Luxury car makers (obviously not the very high end) moving the other direction. Does it somehow make their top end cars less luxurious?

In the end the increased competition in that market will help every consumer, so I anxiously await Hyundai's entry.

The Phaeton wasn't a rebadged anything. It shared it's platform and certain components with the Bentley Continental GT and Audi A8.

Volkswagen attempted the same thing Hyundai is trying now - to move their product line upmarket. There was a $30k jump from the Passat to the Phaeton, with nothing inbetween, other than SUV's. Too big of a jump too quickly. Their reputation wasn't there yet and it it failed miserably.

I agree that if Hyundai wants to be taken seriously, they need to shift their economy cars onto Kia. But that's been there plan all along. The Genesis was their first attempt at entry level luxury. Meanwhile Kia gets the trendy hatches and economy cars, like the Cee'd and Rondo.
