Who would’ve thought that a porn star immigrant who overstayed her visa and married for citizenship and gold would be this way. I am so surprised. /s (Does it need the /s?)
 
To be honest, "who gives a fuck about Christmas stuff" seems to me to be a fairly widespread sentiment. Particularly among women who end up having to do most of it.
That part doesn't seem that ugly to me. Just a reflection of the absurdity of the 'first lady' thing.

The other bit, however...well, that's why she's with Donald. Kindred souls. Like the Macbeths.

I mean, I understand that aspect of it - the pretty dated, sexist aspect that women (and in this case, first-ladies) are responsible for the decorating aspects of the White House. It's just amusing since these people are always ranting about some liberal war on Christmas.

I mean, it's just reminded me all that exhausting family Christmas crap is coming up again soon. Only this year with the added stress of social distancing and everyone in the family facing imminently losing their jobs.

Absolutely it would be covered very differently. It's always partisan hypocrisy with Fox and the Republicans. Of course I'm sure for that very reason Michelle Obama would never have dared express such a view.

Nonetheless I'd sympathise with the sentiment if she had. I don't like Christmas. Not for the "Gremlins" reason, though, I hasten to add. But growing up it was always a time when family stress was at its worst.

Contrast the to the same group taking the words of Michelle and merging them into a new word.

Everyone knows Obama didn't drastically expand the CBP, build fencing, or throw kids in cages. He was total failure on border security.

Oh, and the war on Christmas is totally real. It's barely even celebrated anymore. Basically extinct

Amazing given that this pagan festival was hijacked first by religion. I always laugh when I hear the phrase, “Put Christ back in Christmas.”
 
1) She's right. Christmas is kind of bullshit. But that's literally your job to deal with since hubby ran for office.

2) Fox News would have run months of breathless crazy talk about how the Obamas aren't American if Michelle said this.

3) Melania is just as terrible as her husband.
 
What's the attitude to religion in Slovenia? It occurred to me that maybe Melania is just being "European" in having an non-reverential attitude to Christmas. But then I have no idea what attitudes are like in Slovenia. It's a more religious culture than the UK, I think, but it also had a long period of communism and official atheism, so I don't know.

As far as I'm concerned "Christmas" has never had anything much to do with religion (the name is just a historical accident). The purpose of it has probably remained the same since it was that Pagan festival the early Christian church hijacked - a feast and celebration to make the dark Northern hemisphere winters more bearable. Whenever a religion arrives on the scene it likes to appropriate existing festivals and mystical practices, as it makes it easier for the locals to accept the new ruling class ideology. In practice though it seems all it does is add a load of more things to get stressed about.

But it seems to me there's also a class-based difference. Working class people are more prone to sentimentality and to want to make Christmas special 'for the children'. Middle and upper-class people (whether of liberal or libertarian variety) tend to be more scornful and callous about it. Melania might just be being true to an elite background.

Seems as if in the US there's a tacit agreement to pay lip-service to it being a sacred thing. All cultures have their norms that mean they agree to pretend certain things are other than what they are, I guess (see also the Surpreme Court, the Founding Fathers and the Constitution...or over here, the Royal family)

I don't know how 'real' it is, but I know the war on Christmas seems to start earlier every year.
 
I'm cool with this--maybe we won't have to be subjected to her post-soviet dystopian hellscape design theory when it comes to Christmas?

-Melania’s war on Christmas and children
-COVID bingo bonanza

Sadly her "fuck Christmas” got overshadowed because all those War on Christmas assholes needed to hear it.
