Hi, I was wondering when would be the best time to get the first engineering-related job. I could use some advice because I have lots of spare time and want to be productive. I have just finished my first year in EE.

now??? i got an engineering internship after my 1st year and loved it. about the best pay you can get while still in college, and it gives you something to talk about during interviews that companies really like to hear

don't woory about not getting an internship though, lots o kids don't get any real experience until their last year

CS - tester for about 6 months, developed testing scripts. Moved to software engineering after that.

I have heard it was rare for a freshman to get an internship after their first year. Any ideas what I can do my free time other than browsing ATOT?

I have close to no experience with anything engineering related other than a semester of C programming... So I'm thinking my chances are low.

It is rare to find an internship after your first year, but it's always possible. I'd suggest trying to find some sort of coop/internship before your senior year at the latest. My roommate had a couple internships his sophomore and junior year and companies were jumping all over him. Meanwhile, I had a much harder time finding a job since I never did an internship and just worked over the summer.

That being said, if you don't find anything now I wouldn't sweat it. That "lots of spare time" disappears very quickly as the years go by, so I'd enjoy it.
